No flaw in the plan – they know who you are and where you come from (Hertz price based on website, not based on where your driving licence was issued like Avis).
Hi @JenT, quick question – does this mean one shouldn’t go to an alternative country site (e.g. USA) for Avis, only Hertz?
Best,
NickI’ve never found that switching country made a difference on Avis, but happy to be proven wrong! Avis’s BA booking site seems to (generally) give the best rates.

After trying various permutations on a recent Florida trip, I found that too, @JenT
How are car hire prices now a days? Still mad crazy bonkers, or are they just mad bonkers now?

Coming down a little, an Avis booking from Milan for 2 weeks next month is below £500 after I rebooked. It was closer to £650 when I made the original booking at the start of the year.
Same – recently rebooked an Avis in europe next month for a useful £50 off the £500 I’d pre-paid.
Taking a looooong time for the refund to come through though…

In the USA they’ve definitely fallen to more realistic levels. I have a large car from National now, originally $1000 for 10 days, twice cancelled and rebooked finally at $610. In April same car category and company, rent Las Vegas drop off Phoenix was $900 for 13 days, originally over $1300 but again cancelled and rebooked at opportune moments. Both 0 excess insurance included rates. I use National as like the aisle and choice system.
In London in May I paid £470 for 8 days for an automatic Qashqai or similar, actually given a Volvo XC90. Basic insurance with £1750 excess, again this with National.
About a month ago I asked to change a BA holiday to delay car collection for a day. A really nice helpful agent managed, despite the system, to do so, and even adding a hotel night at the airport resulted in a £300 decrease in overall cost, This was the result of car hire rates falling considerably, that of course was Avis as BA.
I have found, over my last 5 Avis bookings that their prices tend to start to drop 2 months before rental, usually dropping bit by bit until 2 weeks out where they stop. That’s taken from experience in Europe and the UK, not US
Thinking of hiring Avis/Budget at BCN. Is it allowed to take car to Andorra?
Electric rental cars.
Currently in Orlando. Picked up my car at MCO from Hertz and had my pick at Presidents Circle.
I noticed a couple of Polestar that I could have selected but decided on a Kia SUV .
Now been here for 5 days and surprised at the lack of charging points . Even at Disney I counted 4 charging points at studios.
I was tempted by the electric Swede but be aware that there is a lack of visible charging infrastructure around central Florida .
Anyone else have observations on renting electric cars in the USA ?I’m £100s ahead on this summer’s car rentals by cancelling and rebooking at lower rates.
Hertz (via the AU site) is often looking quite competitive with Avis now but I’m sticking with Avis for now (potential 8% TCB + 6-points-per-£ on Nectar Connect).
Only frustration is the Avis refunds don’t happen until you phone to chase them. There’s little hassle phoning, they usually pick up pretty quickly and the call-centre people seem to be onshore UK and know what they’re doing, but the refunds aren’t actually processed when you cancel, they’re processed when you call.
Just a case of using the card linked to nectar connect? No click throughs?
No click-throughs with Nectar Connect but it’s all *extremely* cumbersome and backwards (as with most things Nectar). You have to sign up for Connect, let it ingest your data, wait a week (! in my case it was a week) for offers to appear, hope to get Avis as an offer, and then click to add it.
You then have to wait “up to 25 days” for the transaction to post in Nectar Connect. Forum discussion on the matter is not super-optimistic – hence my use of the word “potential” in the above.
How it will cope with the Avis refund-and-rebook-cheaper transactions is a mystery as well.
I would say that it’s likely that they will respond correctly in time to a firmly-worded letter noting that one has complied with their terms, permitted them access to considerable personal data, and their failure to pay is unacceptable; it’s whether or not you view it as worth the effort.
TCB/Q’co is a stickier wicket but, again, if you are the squeaky wheel and can show you have directed substantial spend, you can probably get them to honour it eventually.
If I book Avis through the BA portal, do I still get my President’s club status perks?
Apologies if been answered before but can’t find an answer.

You should do – bookings via the portal just direct you to the regular website where you log in and book as usual. I haven’t done it for Avis but certainly on hotel bookings I always get my usual status recognition and points earning, with the portal Avios as the cherry on top (IF they arrive!) 😉
Does anyone know roughly how much Budget charges for an additional driver? It would be at GLA or EDI, for 5 days (BAH double TP offer!). Avis includes an extra driver but is quite a bit more expensive. Budget website just says they will tell you how much it is when you collect the car, which isn’t very helpful!

If you have done this as part of the BA Holiday then the extra driver is included as part of the package
“benefits include a free additional driver for Executive Club Members”It only says that next to Avis cars when I do a dummy booking, not Budget.

Budget charges £12.99/day for an extra driver.
Thank you! Probably better value to go with Avis in that case, but I will double check the BAH Ts and Cs.
*Just found the Ts and Cs, the additional driver is only for Avis rentals. If you were only going to have one driver, Budget would be cheaper.
I got the email from BA back in early June regarding being upgraded to Avis Preferred Plus, but I did not do anything about it as I did not need it.
Now I have bookings coming up with BA where it would be useful.
Since the original email, I have moved from BA Silver to BA Gold, so my understanding is that I should be now upgraded to President’s Club. I have not received any BA email since upgrading regarding this though, and the password given in the original email only gives the option of Preferred Plus.
Has anyone else had a similar issue, and how did you get it resolved?Does any Avis status offer anything meaningful?

Pricing seems to be preferential when comparing not being logged in, to logging in…last 5 rentals have been with Avis as cheapest of all the big names for me ( not interested in smaller names tbh) and have always had upgrades, one or two levels. Never any push to take the additional insurance, I just decline and they accept that. Happy enough with them tbh

I’m presidents clubAgree here, not logged in price is cheaper. 5 days out of Vienna in august is pricing at £306.75 logged in, versus £ 289.70 for a prepaid group C both using Hilton or IHG’s rate code. Both on avis uk.
Carhireba gives £306.75 with Avis, but only £247.90 with Budget, same car, same rental desk.
Why would I book with Avis unless I needed that 2nd driver for free?

I actually meant I find the price drops after I log in…I always price it before logging in. Sorry if I wasn’t clear and that is just my experience, of course can be different for others as in your case. I also find the hotel chains/amex plat codes give me higher prices than when I log in. I also never find that the Avis car hire is cheaper via BA despite always checking
