@Liz You might want to recheck your pricing now for a nice surprise.
My Austin one way on Car-Hireba has dropped even further (by over £550 since the start of Jan) for classes B/C/D cars. Down from 1400 to around 850.
Some else posted this ages ago but it’s always been cheaper since I found it: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/book-a-trip/cars.html

Maybe it is, but the available rental locations on it are limited in some way. Austin apparently doesn’t exist.
Booked a pay later rate on the Avis USA website (It was the same price as pay now). Selected residency as UK.
Am I right in thinking I was correct in declining all insurances as I have Curve Metal car rental insurance? As a general tip this rental was for a week out of Boston. Logan Airport was over £1000. Allston a surburb just outside the city was £450!
Always look at every viable rental location, there are big savings to be had.Does anyone know why there are more car options on the USA Avis site vs the Uk website for care hire at Austin (or everywhere for that matter). Is is something to do with insurances? I can get a jeep, or even a Dodge charger whereas the Uk gives me the option of just normal cars, SUVs etc. Having fun car is part of our road trip – and is budgeted for ( although that budget has doubled this year, sigh).
I’m also weighing up the options of booking via a USA site rather than our usual expedia. I have no Amex Plat card so would need to buy extra insurance. This makes me worried as I know its a huge minefield. We’ve rental Alamo via expedia for the last 7 years and had no problems at all, no deposit put on the card at collection. So changing company is a bit daunting.
Thanks all
Not sure how many people this could help but Enterprise have an amazing friends and family discount scheme. My OH checked for her brother the other for LAX, 80% discount for sane group cars vs public site. Upgrades are super cheap
Some great advice in this thread.
In September last year, the best price I could get for a 4 day rental in Florida for April was £445 (for a VW Jetta or similar). I’ve now managed to get a Convertible Mustang (or similar!) for £218 via priceline. Very happy!
Saloon prices seem to be dropping and SUV prices rising in the US. My Jetta equivalent dropped again. Now 45% less than Dec.
My colleague is looking at an SUV rental out of Denver for March and it’s $1000 to rent downtown with Enterprise and $4000 from the airport. That was the reverse of what it was in Dec.
Just a thanks to all on here especially JenT for the advice and tips booking a car and using the Amex Plat insurance in the states. Thank you all we saved a nice tidy sum.
Was in Las Vegas last week and needed a car for the day. Cheapest I could find was £111 for a day if collecting from the airport; we Ubered to the hotel and rented from Enterprise in the hotel next to ours, £31.
Save for the tips in this post- which seem to apply mainly to the US but I presume work globally- does anyone have any UK specific tips?
I need to rent a car for a month in April (on a CA license if that makes any difference). We will need to collect from LHR but can either drop off after four weeks at LHR or drop off after 2.5 weeks in downtown Southampton (not at the airport). I’ve been trawling various sites this afternoon and I am getting some crazy prices.
Easirent are the cheapest but I have never heard of them and fear they are rather like Fox in the US.
Any UK specific tips/comments would be appreciated.
I hired a car recently that only had a usb c socket to charge a smartphone, I’m now going to get a new charging lead to avoid being caught out.

Check more locations that are possible, including SOU airport. Avoid easirent and green motion. Also consider splitting the period up, the latter weeks are not the Easter holiday period and demand should be lower.
Just adding a final data point to my upcoming US booking from Austin to Phoenix. The prices have varied widely and even during the last week it’s been a rollercoaster. For a class E with Avis for 14 days (who are usually the most competitive for one ways), I’ve been quoted as high as £1700 three months ago, down to £727 yesterday.
During the last 10 days the price has swung by up to £140/day and changed usually around late afternoon. So their computer system is dong something wierd. (I’ve been tracking prices morning and afternoon.
Sometimes it’s been cheaper at the airport, sometimes downtown, and none of it makes sense. The SUVs at the start were half the price of saloons, now they’re 2-300 more expensive.
And finally the only way I got this price which was carhire-ba dotcom as a silver. Every other site and direct with Avis was way more expensive unless I care to book through dubious sites like qeeq.com which i wouldnt. I also reject Hertz these days due to their apalling actions in the USA over filing incorrect theft reports on their customers and even non-customers.
Basically keep tracking prices, book a refundable rate and be careful where you rent from as some of the headline deals may not be as good as they look.
Fwiw hotel prices are playing a similar game, I’ll be cancelling/rebooking 4 hotels today to save a few hundred bucks since they’ve reduced by over 15% since I made those reservations in Dec.
I get car shortages, but the prices are just so fluid it’s mad. It’s as if the price algorithms can’t handle the current situation, which I’m sure involves much greater booking and cancellation that previously, contributing to the price instability. I like Avis, and reading reviews suggests they have better inventory control than Hertz, so more reliable. I’m finding that avisba now’s seems to offer only Budget, which is less convenient given no preferred service. Agree with Davefl, check, check and check again.
Found a reasonably priced car hire via http://www.flexibleautos.com. £500 for 9 days in California with Dollar instead of £700+ on other websites. Does anyone know anything about Flexible Autos as an intermediary? To me they seem to be okay, moreover there is a 12% c$$hb$$k on topc$$hb$$k so might be some more savings.

Actually it took me ages to work out why I was only seeing Budget at Austin on Airport and only Avis at Phoenix. You need to be very careful on that site to select the correct (and sometimes misleading) name option to get the brand you want.
For example if you search PHX you’ll be offered 3 options, First is Phoenix Sky Harbor which is Avis, second is Wholesale Phx Az which is the identical rental address but is actually Budget, and then a third which gives an error when selected.
Basically every colocated site has 2 options that arent clear which brand is which until after hit search.
Does anyone know whether Kosovo counts as Europe for excess cover purposes? It isn’t listed in the European policies I’ve seen which stipulate that if it’s not in the list then it’s not in Europe – but as Kosovo isn’t officially recognised, does it technically come under Serbia?
Thanks.
@davefl – interesting thanks. Will have another look later. It never used to be like that as at the locations I’d most frequently use, TPA, MCO, MIA I’d choose the airport and see a mix of Avis and Budget. Typically Avis would be a bit more but always worth it for the Preferred service.

Varies by airport. if you type tampa, the 1st entry covers both brands. If you type Miami, you have to select one of two entries. Orlando is still ok, both under one entry.
Funny that when you type orlando it returns orlando works in bolton which has a seperate entry for each again.
My Australian Uncle has been told (by his OZ TA) for his visit to UK that at 85 he’s to old to hire a car?
Anyone have experience of hires at that age or alternatives?
Thanks
We just paid 154 euros all-in for an SUV at AGP for last week, but prices for 10 days in OPO in August are still over 500 euros! Is it really just due to August being peak season?
And the Qantas site is considerably more expensive than easyCar where I was looking!

I usually use GoldCar in Portugal so tried them for our upcoming trip to MCO and the price came out about half of the Avis price so booked it. Now I see that it is with Fox and see on here that they are not to be trusted. Are they that bad?
Goldcar has a terrible reputation! Might have a look out of desperation though 😂
Great thread – exactly what we needed for HeadforPoints to allow searching of useful answers!
I will be hiring a car for 5 days in July, starting in Quebec City and dropping off at the airport YQB. Following the advice on this forum, I checked various websites, expecting sky high rates:
Avis.co.uk and rentalcars.com quoted £128/day
BA/Avis quoted £110/day less 4 avios per £ spent
avis.com and Hertz.com quoted £78/day and I have Presidents Circle benefits (Hertz.co.uk quoted £75/day)
avis.ca quoted £52/day although this was the pay up front cost, with a £30 fee to canceland finally,
Expedia quoted £38 per day with free cancellation – pay in Canadian dollars at pickup.I believe all these quotations include CDW but no further insurance, so it looks like Expedia is the winner. Am I missing something? Is there a catch?
