My choice for a retirement celebration has just told me they are closing when we plan to have a week in the Caribbean. The whole trip is QM2 transatlantic, a week in northern New England, a week around the capital, a week fly and flop.
The plan was Calabash in Grenada. Service is good, rooms exceptional, food also exceptional and the scuba very good.
So now I’m on the lookout for something else. Since it’s a very special holiday, I was looking at £800-1000 per night all in (room, food, scuba). Whilst some Sandals would be a close fit, it lacks the intimacy of Calabash.
Suggestions? Doesn’t absolutely need to be Caribbean but practically speaking we’d want to have a decent connection from the DC area and then back to the UK.
There used to be a resort in Grenada called La Source which included all the usual AI perks and also scuba diving and daily massage treatments. My in-laws went a couple of times and came back looking about 10 years younger.
I retired just as the world went into lockdown, yours sounds a lot more enjoyable!
I love Grenada! Have a look at La Luna on Grenada. Small quiet and quite remote. It offers an all inclusive option. Not sure about scuba but I’m sure they can sort it. Stayed there for our 25th wedding anniversary several years ago.
La Source became Sandals and it’s a good Sandals. The food was some of the best I remember at Sandals resorts. We did freak them out when we arrived as we arrived outside of the usual windows when planes land. I remember being asked “Why are you here now? How did you get here?” And simply saying “We drove.”
I’ll take a look at Laluna – I know of it, but I’ve not been. Grenada is our favourite island so far in the Caribbean.
Our last Caribbean trip we got a good deal with BA at Sugar Beach and Jade Mountain. Sugar Beach is overrated and Jade Mountain is now 2x what it was and when we went it was already very expensive.
After a weekend of searching, we currently have Spice Island booked. I’m not massively happy that it’s an all inclusive resort but it is next to the best dive shop on the island and I already know the beach is great. It does save me having to find another redemption as I snapped up a one-way back to the UK online at T-355.
I did consider Saint Martin as it’s convenient from DC, but man have the Americans driven the hotel prices to insane levels.
