When working out how much it would be to upgrade with Avios, deducting the Avios required for the current class from the Avios required for the new class gives you an approximation of the Avios required, to which you then add taxes on top. I want to upgrade a long-haul cash booking. Can I use a similar formula?
Yes. The UuA cost calculation is the same whether its a reward booking or an underlying cash booking.
Remember you do need reward seat availability to upgrade and the TP and Avios awarded should under normal circumstances be based on the underlying cash fare paid ie WTP if upgrading to CW. I say normal circumstances since BA’s wonky IT sometimes results in a bank error in your favour. 😀
Sorry – I wasn’t clear there! I know the UuA calculation, but there is currently no reward availability (even though CW has only 4 seats taken, which I assume is someone using all of the reward availability – there’s nobody else in the cabin!). I was wanting to estimate how much I’d likely spend if I upgraded with cash, not Avios.
Ah – that’s not so easy to estimate. How long is a piece of string? It’s definitely not as simple as seeing how much the seat is selling for and deducting what you paid for the lower cabin. You sometimes get an offer in MMB and sometimes get a POUG offer at check in. It also depends on the route and how full the upgraded cabin is.
