Thanks all, looks like Lincoln-Stevenage, walk across the platform, Stevenage-Farringdon, lift to Lizzie line, Farringdon-Heathrow, minimum walking and less strife from the boss.
Barcelona on business. Hotel breakfast outrageously expensive. Step outside, walk 2 mins, find perfect cafe.
Splendid breakfast, better than most large hotels. Quiet, cool atmosphere, friendly staff. Table service. All for £8.19.
Remind me why free breakfast is regarded as such a big perk from hotel status?
Aren’t you that guy that was backing JDB up about sourcing ingredients and cooking your own breakfast when going on holiday?
@BWS – over on the “BA Experience at MAN” thread someone has posted a picture of how the temp lounge is shaping up. “Fenced-off” it definitely is!

The text clearly states they are still working on the area so perhaps best wait until that’s actually finished before commenting?
@BBbetter Funnily enough I was quoting this article to my american friend as I walked her back to the station a few hours ago and she was in disbelief.
No two ways about it, a huge part of the population are just dumb on a level that astounds me, but then there are the majority that are sweet, kind and incredibly welcoming and certainly not dumb.
I’m lying in bed at the moment just about to get up for my next flight. I can’t put into works how incredible this trip has been so far. Everyone I’ve interacted with in the past 12 days have been delightful, friendly, always ready with smile and a laugh/joke and I do mean everyone from the Uber/Lyft drivers to the TSA agents, the bar and hotel staff and the many old and new friends I’ve made over the years in Chicago.
Even when the festival was evacuated due to a bad storm yesterday everyone just took it in their stride as we shelted for an hour waiting for the rain to stop and then just carried on as if nothing had happened.
I’m not going to deny there are issues but hell, just look around the UK and what it’s become.
One last note on Chicago (and I’ll be interested to see the difference when I get to NY) but the amount of homeless and “openly crazy” people has reduced massively in the past 12 months. My Uber driver last night told me the city has made real strides in helping them and it really had been successful in my eyes.
Goodbye Sweet Home Chicago, I’ll be back as soon as I can

@strickers, a good decision, I expect. In April, I took Crossrail LHR to Farringdon and then took the tube to KX (the same route in reverse). It felt a lot quicker than the long slog on the Piccadilly Line, and it was certainly a lot more comfortable.New offer on my Amex today from TravelUp OTA
£15 cashback on a spend of £15 or more
Might be useful on an el-cheapo FR/U2 ticket.Has anyone managed to get QR to correctly calculate a B6 (JetBlue) redemption recently since you can’t book online? Phoning up they quoted me spurious charges for the tax and fees on a transatlantic which was the exact figure of the cash cost of the flight on JetBlue’s own site, and the avios of course? What’s the best way to go about booking with just paying the actual taxes and no/low fees or is that just not possible currently?
@davefl glad that you’re having a great time and I’ve been enjoying your updates. Good to see some positive feedback on a vacation in the US.

I’ve done York-KX-SP-Faringdon-LHR (or LGW) several times now. Very easy now I know where the appropriate lifts are at Faringdon. I would go via Stevenage but not all LNER trains stop there so I’d rather not take the chance. I might try it one time though as it seems like an even better choice especially to Gatwick.

Never cook my own breakfast when away, so probably mot. But I do have fresh fruit and yoghurt in the villa if I’m not in a hotel, and invariably prefer it to a hotel breakfast. I can’t imagine doing that in a hotel with no facilities and no dining table.
Yesterday or the day before someone was mentioning about the huge amount of email spam coming from BA.
I’d agree even to the point that they sent me an email today telling me my avios collecting had slowed down and not to give up on it: “This is no time to press pause”.
Desperation indeed.
@PeterK – my BAC tier points total is still 0. I haven’t received any emails recently apart from for my flight over the weekend. Even though I’ve been silver for more than 10 years with the occasional gold year, I’m definitely not someone BA wants!
@Man-Of-Kent Thank you.
When I posted about the low cost of public transport here, I omitted to mention that there are no dumb zones like London and Manchester, so a single $2.50 ride will get you from the Loop to O’hare, which is the equivalent of Tottenham Court Road to LHR on the Piccadilly line. In fact you could ride the whole Blue line for that same price if you were really bored.

Because it’s free rather than £8.19? 🤷🏽♂️
Well, free is the illusion they like to create, but if you seriously think you aren’t actually paying for it… and then, there’s @jj point that so many of these breakfasts as so poor and so boring.
I can’t believe in reviews how one sees acres of unripe fruit, sweaty industrialised salami, cheese, licky ham etc. congealed scrambled egg, tired looking viennoiseries and poor made to order items like eggs benedict that are a complete travesty. All often served in an overcrowded rather miserable room. I’m quite sure @jj’s breakfast was better than these not really ‘free’ breakfasts.
Last weekend I stayed in a small agrotourism place near Tirana, Albania, €45/night including an outstanding breakfast which was all freshly, individually prepared, served on a terrace worthy of a Relais & Château; just a totally different calibre than these chain breakfasts.
