I love the Kimpton in Samui although for my money you need a pool villa. They rarely acknowledge status for upgrades tho and last time I stayed I had to be moved because there were snakes in the room. The Melia next door is probably better value but I would get a boat villa .

That reminds me, when we were staying in a valley view villa at Alila Ubud Bali a few years back, we had to call a member of staff to remove a snake we saw slither across the bedroom floor, it must of been able to bite, as he used thick gloves and a litter picker type tool, and put it in a pillow case, Our bathroom was basically in the middle of a moat, so I guess they fed on the small frogs that adorned the water.

    I’m having trouble picturing this.

There were about six snakes of different species and some poisonous. Snakes really freak me out – got a really good upgrade tho.

Thank you all for advice on taking car seats from LHR – TFS in July. I think I’ll bubble wrap at home and as we’re there for a couple of weeks I’ll pick up a roll while there and do the same on return/wrap at the airport.

We were thinking of using Airportr to take most of our luggage the day before flight. Anyone have any experience using this service before?

Why pick up a new roll of bubblewrap? Just bring a roll of tape with you, cut the tape you used on way out to get to the seat, and on way back wrap again and use new tape from the tape-roll you brought with you. Car seat bags are also good to put the bubble-wrapped seat in, which helps for carrying, or identification.

Top tip is that the car seat does not come out of your weight allowance. So adding any extra clothes, child toys (nothing that would cause family incident if lost), or souvenirs into the car seat before wrapping up helps you get around space/weight limits of your luggage.

Ok Maybe moat was not the best way to describe it, more like a body of water.

An outdoor / open air bathroom?
I have the dubious pleasure of something like that in Ubud later this year.
Wondering how I’m supposed to go toilet in the night without getting swarmed by mozzies and presumably venomous serpents.

@Aston, my one and only experience of an open air bathroom was many years ago in the Maldives. Indeed the bloodsuckers waited expectantly at night for me to go to the loo and then launched their attack. I ended up having to wrap my entire body and head in a sheet before venturing forth and be as quick as I could 😱 🦟.

It actually wasn’t much better in the day time, except I could see them approaching.

Y’all making Thailand sound very White Lotus (the weird 3rd series which was not a great advert for the place!)

Embrace it! I can’t get enough of Asia and its wildlife wildlife, my favorite part of the world, without a doubt, my next trip in Q4 can’t come soon enough, I believe you are staying at the IC? I would be interested to know your thoughts, as I am looking at options for Bali.

    Just a few quick observations:

The Kimpton Koh Samui is showing at varying points for different rooms but even at a poor Prospect of an upgrade, I really can’t justify double points for a suite.

We have always taken a car seat in a car seat bag and asked them to tag it as fragile. They haven’t always obliged but we have then taken it to oversize, and it’s always come back in good condition. We have had a few mishaps where it hasn’t turned up but that’s just probably unlucky.

Isn’t it funny how so many people have different opinions on what’s really good and what some people describe as hell. To my normal friends I’m probably quite adventurous and an “expert”, to some people on here, I’m probably very mundane. A fascinating world ey?

@yorkshireRich – As long as you enjoy your travels, that’s all that matters, and opting for a trip in Thailand, you have chosen well.

    This is very true.
A neighbour from a few doors away only ever goes caravanning. Always to the very same place in the southwest somewhere.
This year they are apparently being very brave and adventurous and heading to somewhere in Cannock Chase.
I’m not sure what makes this more adventurous than Devon or Cornwall or wherever it is they always go, other than allegedly being the alleged scene of a dogging incident allegedly involving Stan Collymore allegedly.

So yeah, I guess everyone has their own comfort zone, be it an exotic island in Asia, or a car park in the Midlands (allegedly).

One vote for mundane here…. I’ll update you as to Chiang Mai in November. Currently resourcing the most ethical elephant bathing sanctuary for player two’s 40th.

We did one of the sanctuaries run by this lot:

Was happy with the treatment of the elephants there, though clearly I’m not an expert.
    They accept credit card (grudgingly).

@Jim Utd – we have visited the below sanctuary twice now in Chiang Mai, it’s run by a woman called Lek, she rescues elephants from logging companies etc. It’s a quite well known sanctuary, and very well run.
