Long story short had a refund come into my amex gold – had already transferred the membership reward points (around 15k) to BA. I refunded a hotel and have a negative points balance on amex of around 15k. I plan on cancelling my amex gold in a few weeks as first year is nearly up. Would this be a bad idea? What happens if you cancel a card with a negative MR balance?

nth will happen but don’t expect they will welcome you back
I already also have a blue BA amex with them, does that continue the relationship?

of course, they are very unlikely to shut your ba amex on the back of you closing the gold with a – balance, however that doesn’t change the fact that they may not welcome you back to apply for any other card in the future. im not saying they won’t, but think about it, if you were them, would you?
Probs fair – looks like I’ll try and spend some more money on the card before it gets cancelled!
