I have a car rental booked for 8:30 tonight, but I’m changing my flight to arrive about two and a half hours earlier. Do you think there’s a chance the rental place might let me pick up the car earlier? I’ve never had a problem picking up early – they just expect the car back early also.
so in your case, if you now collect the car at 6.00 and its a 7 day rental then they will want the car back by 6.00 next week. If you drop off after 6.00 then its an 8 day rental.

Collected an Avis rental in London two hours earlier than booked. Last Monday so recent.
Depending on the location, they might not have a car for you, or the car they were going to upgrade you to (if applicable).
But subject to availability, there shouldn’t be a problem. Bear in mind, as above, you should expect to return the car at the time you rented it, unless the agent is kind enough to keep your original ‘out time’ unaltered.
I find locations vary widely in how they manage little processes like this, so an experience with one agent at one location isn’t necessarily indicative of what will happen next time.
One other gotcha might be different rates. I’ve had Hertz charge me different day rates depending on time of pickup (ie weekend rate starting at 2pm on a Friday or something like that).
