Apologies for the slightly noddy question.
I am flying BA long haul into Heathrow tomorrow, I then have a 9 hour lay over before a flight into Europe.
My question is will I have an option to collect my luggage after the initial flight, or will this automatically be transferred to the later flight? Meeting family during the layover so aiming to give them some luggage to take home…
Any help is much appreciated
Does the itinerary include an overnight stopover? If yes, then you can collect luggage.
Is the itinerary on two seperate tickets? If yes, you can – as you will need to collect luggage and re check.
If the answer to either of those questions is no, then the answer is no without a lot of hassle…
This is assuming all flights are in and out of LHR.
Where are you planning to meet family, as if you’re transitting it’s not easy to “just” leave LHR during the day… unless you’re transitting from two different terminals. If you want to leave, and you’re not UK / Irish passport holder (or have a right to remain), make sure you have an ETA.
Someone asked this recently. I think if you end up having to retrieve it, it takes a long time, which would eat into your layover.
It’s going to be dependent on the agent who checks in your bags, but I have definitely managed to have luggage checked through to my first stop only by BA on the couple of occasions I’ve requested it, the last time was at OPO in September last year.
Not an overnight stopover. We are UK passport holders.
Land from Riyadh at 05:30. Intending on using the Business Arrivals lounge at T5. BA have advised leaving the terminal is fine due to 6+ hour layover.
Flying to Faro later in the afternoon.
We don’t need our luggage per se, but just dropping it back at ‘home’ in the UK for our return to UK after Faro. Saves taking it to Faro.
Ask in Riyadh for your luggage to be checked to LHR only, but there is definitely no guarantee of success. If they won’t short check it then you will spend a long time trying to get hold of it, to the point that I wouldn’t bother unless you really need to get it in London.
Take anything which complies with the hand baggage dimensions in the cabin with you with stuff you want to get rid of, just in case you’re not successful!
Thanks All. For absolute clarity and aside from the luggage point. Will I have any problems leaving the airport, accessing the T5 Business arrivals lounge and leaving site etc?
BA policy (like that of many airlines) is not to short check bags where the next flight is the same day as your arrival.
There is no harm in asking at RUH but outstations are known for being strict on this. If they do then great – just make sure you get them to tag the right bags to the right place.
If they can’t then once you get to LHR you can ask at the baggage desk in the T5 baggage hall if they can retrieve some of the bags for you. They can do this but it isn’t a priority for them – it’s not a complicated process just not a priority. Once you have the bags you can leave the baggage hall and hand them over to whomever you want to or leave them at the commercial left luggage office.
Given you only want some of the bags at LHR make sure you note the individual bag tags of those bags so they don’t retrieve the wrong ones. Given you only want some of the bags there shouldn’t be any issues with thigs like skiplagging.
There is absolutly no problem in you leaving the airport site should you wish but of course you need to be back in good time for your next flight to meet BAs conformance deadlines.
