We’re thinking of doing a New Zealand trip via Hawaii and Fiji in early 2026 utilising both a companion voucher to/from LAX or SFO plus the partner reward chart using AA and Air Fiji. Has anyone else used this approach and did it work OK?
I don’t think you’ll be able to add any flights onto the LHR – SFO/LAX booking if you are using a 2-4-1
They would need to be separate bookings.
If you wanted it all on one booking then you wouldn’t be able to use the 2-4-1
But either way you’ll be limited by availability on the partners
The voucher can only be used on BA, IB and EI, none of which fly to NZ/Pacific islands, so you couldn’t have those on the same booking, if that’s what you’re asking. Otherwise not sure what the question is!
I am aware it would be two separate bookings. I’d allow a couple of nights in LAX/SFO both ways. I guess the question is in 2 parts. 1. Tagging on a partner reward chart itinerary to a 241, did it work out OK? 2. Booking a multi-partner award booking with those Airlines for those origins and destinations, was it easy to get availability, what were the taxes and anything else worth knowing.
I think the way you’re phrasing this is causing confusion! You’re planning to use a 241 to fly to the US west coast, then flying on to NZ/Hawaii on a different airline. I think @strickers is doing something similar atm.
The best thing you can do is check availability and make some dummy bookings to get an idea of availability. Taxes from the US are very low ($6 per sector on AA and DL), so using avios can be a great deal. SeatSpy shows AA availability, however you will get accurate avios pricing on ba.com.
The American blogs are helpful for tips on finding these flights, e.g.

I’ve done a few trips starting and ending with the 241 booking in the US with internal or Caribbean flights booked between those dates and never had any issues. Like you say, building in a couple of days wriggle room is essential for peace of mind!

As these would be separate bookings nothing is ‘tagged on’.
The 2-4-1 flight to the US is totally disconnected to the flight to NZ.
