Forums Other Destination advice Cross-country Skiing near Stockholm?

Planning a weekend flit to Stockholm to go cross-country skiing in late November – does anyone have any recommendations for the best xc tracks in the vicinity, especially the best for artificial snow if there is insufficient natural snow on the ground please? Due to work commitments/annual leave restrictions there is only one weekend we can go otherwise we would have left it till there was guaranteed snowfall. Any recommendations for using the Amex Plat dining credit in Stockholm are also very welcome thanks!

Only question is does it have to be Stockholm, or could you fly to Åre/Östersund?

Should be good natural tracks up there, and you could use your Amex dining credit at Werséns in Åre.

@dundj thanks for the suggestion of Åre/Östersund, I was looking at Stockholm primarily as BA fly there are there are RFS seats available for the dates we want. Unfortunately there are no direct flights from London to Åre/Östersund (it would be a change at ARN with SAS). We would only be going for 2 nights hence Stockholm is easier but will certainly consider Åre/Östersund for a future xc ski trip. We have already visited Stockholm and done all the sightseeing stuff so this would be purely for a blast of Nordic air and to fire up the calves ready for the ski season proper!

@ExpatInBerlin it’s not a problem. Was looking at other options on Google Flights which have directs with BA.

Depending on direct options then Trondheim or Tromsø in Norway, or Rovaniemi in Finland?

All have excellent tracks, but won’t have the options to use the Amex credit.

Rovaniemi has decent flight times on a Friday with Finnair as well.

Just throwing this out there but what about Lillehammer in Norway? Train straight from Oslo airport (90 mins I think) and I see on the webcams they already have some snow there.

Driving in Norway is also easy IME.

@dundj thank you for the Finnish and Norwegian suggestions, we’ve now booked for Stockholm (we’ve decided to manage our expectations as it being more of a Christmas markets trip unless there is fresh snow! We also wanted to use our £150 Amex dining credit as it’s our last chance this year) but having looked into the other areas you’ve suggested, we’re now hoping to do a few days XC skiing in northern Scandinavia in 2024! Really useful to be able to use avios on Finnair too, thanks for reminding me of that.

@Therealswisstony I hadn’t thought of Lillehammer, I did ski at Holmenkollen a few years ago during a weekend in Oslo as it’s easily accessible on public transport. I remember getting lots of amused looks from locals seeing as I was one of a handful of people buying a lift pass for their alpine ski area whereas everyone else was going XC skiing!

@ExpatInBerlin glad to have planted a couple of thoughts for future travels. I completely forgot to add Lahti, easily accessible by train from Helsinki which have miles of beautiful tracks too. Though probably one for a January and February rather than November potentially.

I really enjoy XC Skiing as well and when in Oslo love getting the metro up to Frognerseteren with the locals in the morning to get out on all the tracks around Hollmenkollen and North of the city too. Or being there for the World Cup events in March which is fantastic.
