Sorry for opening another topic, but I’m confused about the rules of avios redemptions. I have a biz one and I’m meant to fly out tomorrow but I can’t. If I cancel it do I get a voucher or do I lose everything? Or if I don’t do I simply pay the £35 cancellation fee? And what if I don’t cancel it and move it to the following day (when likely I’ll be flying)?
Thank you!
You can cancel up to 24 hours before the flight for a full refund of Avios and cash paid minus a fee of £35 per pax.
Also as flight is before 30 Sep I believe you are still in scope for BWC so may be able to apply for a FTV which will result in everything coming back as it is an Avios booking. You won’t get a FTV as far as I am aware
If you booked before the 7th of June you will be covered under the book with confidence policy and will receive your money back onto your card and the avios returned to your account when you apply for a voucher online. You won’t be charged a cancellation fee and you will get your cash/avios in about 4 weeks maximum.
If you want to move it you will need to call , you will need availability and you will be charged £35 per ticket/person.
… and you can move to the next day (or any other day) as long as there is reward availability.
And if you’re covered by BwC, the cancellation period is not 24 hours but 1 hour I believe?
EDIT: You should find this useful https://www.headforpoints.com/2021/04/01/how-do-i-change-an-avios-flight-booking-what-will-it-cost/
If the flight involves Heathrow and returning before end of September, then you should be able to change/cancel with no fee as per https://www.headforpoints.com/2022/07/15/british-airways-giving-all-passengers-extra-flexibility/ (not sure if it’ll get wrapped up in a voucher or just refunded)
Thank you. It looks like the BWC extension is only valid for flights from not to Heathrow. I should probably give them a call and see what they say but very helpful to have some tips on how to navigate any computer says no answers.
The BWC policy didn’t limit you based on the airport involved and was valid on flights to Heathrow, used it several times to move or cancel a flight to LHR and never had an issue.
But i bought this flight two days ago… am i still covered by bwc?
No, only flights purchased before 7th June are covered by BWC.
But i bought this flight two days ago… am i still covered by bwc?
No. As Roberto said above, only if you booked before the 7th June. And BwC wasn’t limited to LHR. The increased flexibility posted above is due to Heathrow capping. It’s not the BwC – just to clear things up.
In your situation you can cancel 24 hrs before departure, pay £35 and get everything refunded. Alternatively, you can pay £35 and change the date of your flight (if there’s Avios seat availability).
But i bought this flight two days ago… am i still covered by bwc?
Can I just gently say that shis info would have been incredibly useful – and prevented some incorrect replies relating to your situation – if you had included this vital piece of information in your very first post.
Can I add something to this?
So when I booked the flight on Friday last week it was for two passengers, but later that day when it was clear that my husband couldn’t fly with me, I called CS, had the booking split and cancelled his flight. Then the day after, when I realised I couldn’t fly either I posted the above.
I contacted CS via the website chat and the agent didn’t realise that I was outside my COP as he thought the booking had been made the same day. He wrote “as you’re within your COP I’ll go ahead and ask the back office to refund you in full, cash and avios”. I said great and saved the transcript of the chat.
If the back office realises the error, do you think they’ll honour what the agent wrongly wrote? I’m going to play dumb and fight it but it’d be interesting to know if you had any similar experience.
Thanks
Keep stumm and let us know what happens, @VinZ. The BA agent may actually have seen the history of the booking and quietly done you a favour by pretending to assume a 24 hour cooling off period might apply. There are some very nice BA agents around.
