Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Curve travel insurance – any good?

    For those with Curve Metal, do you find the travel insurance to be good enough for a family of four going to the USA? Also assuming you don’t have to pay for the trip with the metal card to take advantage of it?

    For me, the travel insurance is useless, as the sports coverage doesn’t apply where participating in the sport is the main reason for travel.

    So you’re covered for skiing…unless you go on a skiing holiday. You’re covered for hiking…unless you go on a hikimg holiday. You’re covered for cycling…unless you go on a cycling holiday. And you’re covered for sailing…unless you go on a sailing holiday.

    That policy exclusion affects most of my trips. It also makes me suspect that similarly absurd restrictions apply across the policy.

    Be very careful.

    For the same reasons as mentioned and more I don’t rely on Curve insurance, especially for the USA and medical cover. Unless you think of yourself as a lucky gambler, make sure you have an additional policy that you are confident in the cover of is my advice.

    I looked three times before deciding I did trust it for the US.
    I do not consider myself a lucky gambler. Of course with all insurance the proof is in the pay-out. The policy is underwritten by AXA, so should be reputable. Hopefully I will not need to test it.

    @jj
    has half a point, but it doesn’t sound relevant to the OP. The insurance does seem useless for a skiing holiday, but specialist insurance exists for this. Not being able to ride a bike myself, a cycling holiday has never been a consideration, but the exclusions are “road cycling” and “Mountain bicycling on tarmac” and all the activity exclusions are “if your participation in them is the sole or main reason for your trip”. So, no problem hiring a bike for the day. Hiking by the way is not mentioned. “Trekking (up to 4000 metres)” is. I had a very pleasant hike in the Everglades (up to about 4 metres!) today, without worrying about my insurance cover.

    I wonder if @jj or @Qwerty have any other concrete examples of deficiencies in the policy? My worry was the medical cover but it seemed to stack up- £15m emergency medical expenses (MSE top picks have a minimum of £2m).

    However, jj’s advice “be very careful” is of course wise. Read the policy and decide if it meets your needs.

    BTW, I did not trust the car hire excess insurance which also comes with Curve, and have taken out a separate policy for that.
