Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Hilton Honors Delayed new hotel opening date – advanced reservation cancelled by hotel

  • 4 posts

just looking at readers opinion/experience on cancellation by hotel. I booked a weeks stay at Zemi Miches Curio Collection, DR. Booking was for June 2025 and booking done in October 2024. The hotel was due to open in Feb 2025 but the opening has been pushed back. got an email from the hotel this week regarding cancellation of my advance reservation. Would Hilton offer any compensation for the inconvenience of booking cancellation?

Did you book on cash or points, and did you book it directly with Hilton?

These situations are difficult because while you have various rights (in the UK at least) they are difficult to enforce so as a practical matter you need to negotiate the best possible outcome, firstly deciding what you want that to be. You aren’t going to be compensated in any meaningful way for the inconvenience which is the only thing you reference in your original post, but to the extent that an alternative, comparable hotel now costs more, you should be compensated for that extra cost.

Bear in mind that Hilton is effectively just acting as an OTA here. They can’t tell the hotel owner what to do although they can suggest and Hilton will be reluctant to pay out of its own pocket.

Good luck, and please come back to tell us the outcome as that will help others in similar situations.

Assuming that any money already payed is refunded: with 5 months to arrange an alternative and countless other hotels available in the region bookable with a couple of clicks… what inconvenience have you suffered that is so severe that reparative compensation is required?

I’m not really fussed with this. I’ve got another reservation sorted elsewhere. Obviously a new booking now(closer to travel day)on other properties are marginally more expensive. But I thought I’ll just ask the question here to see if there’s been any compensation/goodwill in the past that I can look into requesting too.

I disagree with @JDB that you can’t be compensated in any meaningful way. I had this several times with various chains and I have been given points, half priced rooms at sister hotels, etc. that were very meaningful. Just know what you want as compensation, but be firm and don’t relent.

The reason I asked about if the booking was cash and direct is Hilton can move you to Hilton La Romana if you call them, also request the Adult section as well as a room in the Enclave section as a similar standard to the Zemi Miches. I think Zemi is going to be a better resort when it opens though.

Base it on price now versus your original price at Zemi too.

Assuming you are flying into PUJ the transfer cost should be similar due to distance. I think Zemi would be a better resort overall so depending on room type originally booked try to get a better room.
