Amex currently take my DD payments 14 days after the statement date. I always knew this was a bit of a rip-off (taking the money earlier than the payment date), but I liked the peace of mind of a DD. They’ve emailed me today to say they’re reducing the it from 14 to 12 days. I’m not happy with this and will change back to manual payments.
Mines been moved from just after payday, to just before. Also cancelling my direct debit, which as you say is a pain
May I suggest you actually change the direct debit to take the minimum amount, then make a manual payment for the rest a few days later? You won’t default then if you forget.
@strickers that’s a very good suggestion. Thanks
Are Amex like Virgin where they will still take the minimum payment even if you pay the outstanding balance in full, or are they like Barclaycard, where if you pay the full outstanding balance, they don’t take the minimum payment?

Excellent idea.

It’s as clear as mud to me. This is all I can find:
“If the amount you pay is less than the full amount you owe, we’ll use your payment to pay off arrears before
other amounts you owe us. We’ll then pay off the monthly instalment amount and monthly instalment fee that
you owe in relation to any Instalment Plan.
We’ll then pay off the remaining amounts you owe at the highest interest rates before amounts charged at
lower interest rates. We’ll also apply payments to amounts that have appeared on your statements before
amounts that have not yet appeared on your statements.”Thanks, but that relates to carrying over debt, not paying the full outstanding balance on a monthly basis.

No, if you pay Amex in full, they will send you an email advising the DD has been reduced to zero. This does of course require one to make that payment at least x days before the DD would normally be taken. It used to be five working days I think.
That’s a shame because I like Virgin always taking the minimum payment by Direct Debit because it counts as 1 of the 2 Direct Debit mandates required to qualify for my monthly current account rewards cashback from RBS.
What’s the problem? DD for min payment and then pay the rest manually by the due date
No problem, that is what I plan to do. Would just prefer to pay the lot and then have the minimum payment come off the next months spending, which is how it works with Virgin Atlantic.
If you pay the full balance on the day the minimum payment is taken by DD, isn’t that achieving a similar effect?
