Highly unlikely there will ever be direct flights from LHW (Lanzhou, Gansu, China) to JFK.

You must mean LHR or LGW, but it could be either one!

Just look on Google flights for the period you want to travel and choose from there? Pretty much every airline is both the cheapest and the most expensive… Depends entirely on when you book and your dates of travel.

Also with some airlines staying a Saturday night will be cheapest, so check including that if you weren’t already.

I’d use Avios if its Christmas – whilst Economy redemptions are usually bad value it may make sense here.

Loads of cheap flights available over the period. Out Christmas Eve, Back Hogmanay, Circa £400 on BA or AA.

I agree with Rob, you’re unlikely to get a better deal for cash, especially if you’re only looking to fly one way? You didn’t mention that you’re looking for a return, if you are, you’ve got a better chance of getting a low price for cash.

Note also that Avios bookings are refunable and amendable until 24 hours before departure which is a major benefit of reward flights. Also, checked luggage is included, it might not be on the cheapest cash ticket depending on the airline.

It’s the equivalent of £350 each way on an Avios ticket on a ‘peak’ date (£300 off peak), which is easy to beat in low season when booked as as a cash return, but might represent good value during the festive season. Now’s the time to book as even to JFK (and Newark) which has loads of flights, Avios seats will get snapped up for busy times of year.
