I upgraded to the premium (black) card in August 2024. I received a companion voucher a few weeks later. Today I phoned to downgrade to the free card and was told the downgrade was not available. This was confirmed by Amex chatstating that I had upgraded in August and the downgrade option is not available to me.Is there a minimum time before downgrade (and refund) is possible? Has this happened to anyone else. Thank you

Amex has generally got a bit stricter but in any event it seems a little unrealistic to expect to be able to upgrade and downgrade at will, essentially trying to evade the fee that others are expected to pay.
I have to concur with @JDB that it’s pushing it a little upgrading and downgrading within 3 months! The other advice people generally give on here is that you may want to cancel the card and start your clock ticking for another SUB in 2 years. Unless Amex changes the rules again, of course …
