Forums Payment cards American Express Downgrading from BA Premium Plus – best option?

  • 8 posts

Going to cancel our BA Premium Plus card, what is the best option considering we have companion vouchers to use?

Is it worth downgrading to the free BA Amex + also getting the AMEX gold (free first year) OR just get the Gold one?

    Thanks,
    EG

If you qualify, the small business cards are an excellent alternative choice.

Personally, I would not hold the free BA card.

I’d hold off on Gold (or ARCC or Platinum) until I qualified for a sign-up bonus.

Nectar or Marriott would be my first choice. If you want better hotel offers, get the Nectar. If you want better Marriott offers, get the Marriott.

Thank you @memesweeper, so can we use any Amex card (even if is a hotel co-branded one) to redeem the BA companion voucher?
Unfortunately we don’t qualify for the small business card.

Unfortunately we don’t qualify for the small business card.

In theory you need the BAPP that earned the voucher.

In practice the BA IT requires any Amex. It’s not inconceivable this might change, but this “any Amex” rule has been the case for many years, and no sign of change yet. Keep an eye on these forums, of course.

I have been asked specifically for the card number of the card in the name of the owner of the 241 voucher, so having the free card is the easy option.

Equally, we had a trip cancelled and rebooked, after the voucher-owner’s card had been cancelled – so we had a refund to a closed card and the new fees were taken from a completely unrelated card, which they didn’t seem to either notice or care about.

So it can be different every time you speak to someone.
