Forums Other Destination advice Dubai DXB to Abu Dhabi – alternatives between Taxi and Metro+Bus?

  • 101 posts

For an upcoming trip to Asia, we’re using the Sri Lankan airlines deal on AUH-CMB-CGK for the main part. (£800 for 560 tier points! Availability most days, and lots of cheap onward flights from Jakarta)

As BA aren’t currently flying to Abu Dhabi, and the connections via Doha or Amman didn’t quite work for us, we’ve opted to do an avios redemption with BA into Dubai, on the afternoon flight. Then we need to get over to our hotel near-ish AUH airport.

The cheap-but-slow option would be to take the metro from the airport into Dubai, then hop on the E100 or E101 coach. Cost looks to be about a tenner each, but it’s slow and I think we probably get in too late for the last bus.

The easy option is to just take a taxi. When I’ve done Dubai – Abu Dhabi before it was roughly £100, but I guess it’ll be a bit more as we’ll be on night rates.

Is there anything between those two we could look at? Pre-booked taxis? Shared transfers? Coaches from the airport, which are open to BA passengers? Or anything like that?

Sixt offer prebooked rides in the UAE where a man with a sign has your name up at DXB arrivals. They start at similar price to others but I mention cos you can find discount codes online.

I have done the DXB to Abu Dhabi (Yas Island) taxi trip a number of times before at around midnight and the cost is about 300 Dirhams / £65 and you can pay by card. It takes around 1 hr 15 mins and is well worth it at that time of night in my opinion. Make sure however that you get one of the standard Dubai taxis and not the black cars they sometimes try to put you in as I think they charge a premium.

GetTransfer – a decent app/website – put in your dates/times and various drivers bid for the job – you can see their reviews and what car/van they drive…… Pre book it and pay on Amex – think Welcome10 gets 10% off first booking too…

Careem / uber both work fine at DXB as another option, ~430AED, although it’s dynamic pricing. Credit card payment of your choice.
Free Wi-Fi in DXB arrivals to request a car via the app.
The pickup point does change every so often, the last time I used Careem at T1 DXB arrivals it was Short Stay Parking Area A1 – zone 3. Signed as you come out of customs.

Why would you need to pre-book by app? There are loads of taxis ready to be taken, which use the same rate card as Careem on App.
    Uber is more expensive too
