We had some issues on our flight and BA customer services have agreed to provide either £300 in e-vouchers or 55k avios. I’m thinking the obvious option is the avios as they effectively have no expiry and are worth approximately £550 worse case. Any thoughts/advice on this would be greatly appreciated (in case I am missing something).
Definitely take the avios. The voucher has a 1 year expiry date, and can only be used on cash fares. If you could use the voucher to pay the taxes on an award booking, it wouldn’t be too bad, but you can’t.
I would take Avios. Significantly more flexible and the value depends on when and where you want to fly.
Just booked a one way FAO-LON for next week in CE for 15k Avios + £37, BA wants £508 for the same flight in cash. Also many European destinations hit £400 one way in economy for Christmas. So visiting a lovely Christmas market in Krakow, Vienna or Prague is cheap with Avios.
avios.
Unless you really, really don’t have a plan to use them in next, say, 12-15 months.
Bottom line cashout to Nectar 2/3rds of £550 ?
I was offered a £400 eVoucher which BA refused to swap for any Avios – so I’d definitely take the Avios in your situation.
Interesting! We were only given the option of a cash e-voucher which I now realise is quite restrictive. A ploy to get you to book new cash tickets which we rarely do.
Wonder if we ask for avios instead if we’d get better luck.
How did you ask for Avios? In my case they just issued a £200 voucher and closed the complaint.

I replied to the email giving me a £400 eVoucher, asking for Avios instead. They replied that it couldnt be swapped. Shame
BA seem to go through phases of offering avios instead of cash – I think it maybe some sort of testing the acceptability of offerng this as well as the number of avios to offer instead of the cash.
At one point they even offerfed it as an alternative to paying cash for EU261 compensation. (perfectly legal as per the regulation but it’s down to the passenger which to accept)
Interesting – we got a response to our request for avios instead of the voucher. £200 voucher successfully swapped for 37,000 avios. Very pleased.
