Was looking at JBG , 2 passengers, November, BA Voucher
180,000 + £900 – J – good deal?
Seat selection is circa £117 per seat per leg – so another £500 to be sat next to each other.
How full do you think the A380 upper deck CS would be first week of November. Lowly Blue status, will Bronze, Silver and Gold have snapped up the pair seating before I get chance 24hrs before.
Not a direct comparison but same route and dates (no Upper availability)
Virgin Voucher
30,000 + £602 – economy classic and £1000 PE
I refused to pay for seat selection prior to getting to Silver recently and never ended up with terrible seats. But we complement each other well, @Ash, I now deliberately select window seats in CS so you wouldn’t have to worry about me snagging a middle pair.
I can’t answer your specific question but on our last 3 LH flights 1 of our family of 3 has always been on a separate booking (as the other 2 were in F and/or using the 241), and when picking the 3rd seat at OLCI there have always been many more middle seats than window seats available in CS so that has led me to think that people do actually prefer the windows! YMMV, of course.
£117 fee for selecting a seat?? That’s madness!!!
Firstly, A380 is CW yin-yang seats not Club Suite. There are therefore more pairs available as it’s 2-4-2 or 2-3-2.
CW is actually better for a couple if you want to talk to each other & the middle 2 rear facing seats in a central 4 are excellent for a couple, particularly on a night flight as they are private & protected from aisle. They are also very unpopular for solo travellers as it’s tantamount to sharing a bed with someone!
The upper deck has a middle 3 so the “double bed” option isn’t available. Upstairs is also more popular so will fill up faster & have less/no choice for you at check in. Whilst I prefer the upper deck there’s not a huge difference on A380 (it’s worlds away from the private jet feel upstairs in a 747). There’s a big lavatory at the front, it’s marginally quieter & you may disembark a minute earlier (jet bridge connects to upper deck first) but that’s it.
Price wise £2700 for 2 (valuing Avios at 1p each) is a very good deal entering high season for SA. It’s also a flight where business class really comes into its own due to long overnight legs with minimal time difference. Getting a decent sleep each way effectively adds 2 days to your holiday. Flying PE would mean I would block out day of arrival for recovery/sleep & I’d need a recovery day when I got home as well vs feeling up to a days work.
I dont think Id ever pay £117 to pick a seat, its disgusting and the principle of refusing to pay them to pick a seat on a business/premium ticket.
