Good morning everyone!
I have an interesting question for you,
When booking a cash flight the ticket you buy, naturally falls into a letter category and rightfully so, as each letter gives you different benefits e.g. F Fare is different than an A class, and an I fare is different than a C class, all this makes sense as different classes gets you different benefits
However
Lets flip the script for a minute and talk about redemption’s When redeeming points for a flight, why do the tickets tend to fall into a letter category as well?
it makes no difference to the earning back ratio as its non anyways ( i’m talking about a full ticket redemption)
so why bother with all these letters?
Maybe i just woke up too early this morning but this is now bugging me
BA redemptions don’t fall into a lettered category. If they did, it would be easy for anyone with GDS access to do something like SeatSpy. Most airlines, admittedy, do use a separate letter which is why ExpertFlyer exists.
BA does have them Z / U / P / X IIRC but I’d guess that they’re just used where required in the various back end systems, as @Rob says these aren’t published to the GDS or publicly available in any way other than via BA reward searches or third party tools that view that data
I refer you back to the excellent response to your post on flyer talk by corporate-wage-slave
You really won’t get a better response then his.
What a very excellent answer from corporate-wage-slave referred to by @BFIS above.
I wonder if other replies haven’t wanted to complicate things. The OP has hit on a key point even though it’s slightly irritating to see they pisted at the same time across multiple forums without even waiting to see if a useful and incidentally, comprehensive answer such as the one above given in the Other Place, would be received.
The key point, as the OP doubtless had pretty much worked out, is that regardless of award or cash booking, with most airlines what you get is related to the booking class=fare bucket. So on Qatar Airways for instance, one of the booking classes in Business won’t give you lounge access to Qatar’s own Al Mourjan lounge in Doha but other booking classes in Business, cash and award, have retained this access. Weirdly, the Business booking class from which Qatar have removed this lounge access is a type of cash paid ticket. Whereas for now, award booking classes have retained that lounge access.
I am not sure if Google has completely neutered itamatrix by now but for specialists who don’t mind researching and learning about its syntax, if you knew the various booking classes used by each airline for award tix then very efficient searches used to be able to be made. Try Flyertalk archives for more… or did I say that already 🙂
