Hi
I’ve seen Rob mention a few times Amex agents are well versed in answering this question.
Tried twice now and not getting anywhere.
Is there a specific number to ring. Brighton are passing us to Customer Services who then start talking about supplementary cards, and not understanding the question.
They can usually tell you this via chat. Be aware, however, that if they get it wrong, you have very little comeback, so it’s better if you can find some evidence of your own.
Thanks. Live chat equally unhelpful telling me that as there is no Platinum card in my name I’m entitled to the bonus.
When I challenged it they are now emailing someone else who needs 7-10 days to get back to me.
Amex CS used to be good.
In terms of evidence – there’s nothing online so a bit stuck really.
You should have received a letter with the date of closure of your previous account(s) – that’s the evidence you need. Alternatively you could look at old statements for the date of a membership fee refund after cancellation.
I Asked this the other day and the way we got to the bottom of it from a helpful HFPer was to check a credit score company who will have a note made of when the account was closed.
Amex on chat and phone were unhelpful and they could only see my OH in reference to the supplementary card holder that she is on my BAPP rather than the old account we were hoping to track down when she had a gold.

I checked this out recently for myself. I found my letter from Amex 2 years ago confirming my account closure which stated “your account is cancelled from DD/MM/YYYY” This date matched the account closure date on my credit record (checked via one of banking apps).

This is similar to my approach – look for last transactions/payments, then give it a month for safekeeping. Amex were fine to give out the date of closure a few years ago, not sure why they would have changed now.
Hi I’ve had a problem with this recently , wasn’t sure when my 24 months was up as interested in getting the BAPP card.
Called up spoke to Brighton office , they gave me the date when I last had my previous Amex card. Waited 2 weeks after the date given just to be sure . Got the BAPP card , after spending and waiting a little while , there was no spend tracker . Contacted Amex who said they will investigate with back office, 7 days later they said wasn’t eligible for the bonus as I reapplied within 24 months.
Called back they wouldn’t do anything .
Emailed the ceo , 48 hours later I had a call back , they said would investigate and get back to me by xxxxx
They advised that they would honour the welcome bonus once I hit the spend. they managed to find the call and agreed I was misadvised
I still had my cancellation letter from last time and applied three days after the date of the letter. Customer service agent confirmed I’m eligible for the bonus. So all good. Had tried customer services before applying and they simply couldn’t find my old account…
If you don’t have a letter but are still with the same bank, you could check your banking app for your last payment to AMEX. That’s another thing I tried.
