Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club First/economy redemption: call needed?

  • 40 posts

Trying to book a first outbound/economy inbound redemption, but BA IT seems to prevent it. The return leg only shows down to PE as an option, presumably due to a quirk in the tech. Is a call needed?

The system can generally only show 3 classes on the screen. You can call to book but doing this as one booking may seriously mess up the surcharges and it may be best just to do it 2 singles. Have you read the articles and threads on RFS in long haul? Trying to combine F with other cabins can now cause issues!

Since you are booking First, albeit only in one direction, if necessary you can call the “You First” number and should not have to wait too long to speak with someone.

It is worth noting that combining First with other classes is a special case since the new long-haul RFS pricing doesn’t apply to First. I suspect that what look like IT quirks may in fact be deliberate to prevent you from overpaying for a mixed class redemption.

It is even more complicated when starting from another European country with a short-haul as we do. I recently booked a First outbound / PE inbound award for my OH and had to do this over the phone as it involved an open jaw as well as mixed classes. In our case it turned out to be less expensive in both avios and cash to book it as two one-ways, and the outbound in First didn’t actually cost any more than the same routing would have cost in Business.

If you haven’t already done this, work out the cost (including taxes) of doing 2x 1 way redemptions. We’ve done economy/business before as one booking which was cheaper, but often the taxes coming back are lower just booked as a single. The maths will obviously be different if you’re using a 2 4 1 but if you know what the cost is before you call, then it makes the decision easier (I find the options can be bamboozling when on the phone, but that might just be me!)
