Morning All
I was flying to Hongkong a few weeks back and the flight had a technical problem and after 9 hours arrived back in Heathrow – not what you want but these things happen.
BA put us in a hotel, we agreed to fly out 24 hours later with Lufansa and they sorted the flights. The hotel weirdly wasnt on any route back to the airport so we had to get a taxi back.
Just wondering what exactly can I get in compensation in this situation, im assuming the Taxi and EU261 but is there anything else? because of the delay I had to rebook my connecting flight as it was with another airline as BA do not fly to Thailand any more, rebook my airport taxi and Miss the night in the hotel. EU261 will cover 80% of the cost but the connecting flight last minute was very expensive, Travel insurance reads as though it will only pay £20 per person per 12 hours delay
@davet you should as you say get the taxi costs and EC261 compensation although BA might fight the compensation as ‘technical’ isn’t always eligible. Unfortunately, for the rest, ie consequential losses, they aren’t BA’s responsibility. It’s always a risk with bookings on separate tickets. I’m surprised your insurance is only offering a small cash sum for the delay as many policies will cover the travel disruption by paying for missed flights, unused hotels etc.

Me too. My travel insurance covers travel delays, and additionally covers missed departures and missed connections. Check your policy again. Or give them a call.
After a long dispute with my travel insurance they have refused to pay out because they only cover cancellations if I do not fly at all, they also only covered delays for the time of delay in departure not the longer route to get there so my pay out is £80 lol
the costs I have lost are about equal to the eu261 pay out which I have received, should I just accept things as they are or is it worth trying to recover the missed flight cost from BA?
BA are not liable for these costs such as the separatly booked flight, hotel room you didn’t use etc
BTW if these were cash flights don’t forget to claim Original Routing Credit so you don’t miss ot on the BAEC TPs and avios.
AND if you collect Star Alliance points you can slso double dip and claim those as well.
Assuming this is Cathay?
I had a 2hr delay last year with them that caused me to miss an onwards connection from HKG (leading to a 24hr delay), due to a technical issue. Was able to get the full compensation, but they were a bit difficult to reach. Ended up getting it solved through their Twitter/X chat after sending numerous emails / claims. My understanding is that “Technical Issue” is almost always a valid reason to claim, unless it’s due to something like a bird strike.

It was the BA flight that returned to LHR, and the OP had a separately booked onward ticket with a tight connection anyway
