Hello everyone,
In October my free year of Gold will come to an end. At the moment I have around 42K points (the I will probably transfer in BA avios).
But I’m wondering what would you suggest what I should do next? Closing the card? As I spent more than 12k on it should I move to another one for the 2-1 voucher or is not possible?
What would be your strategy?
Thanks
Where do you want to travel, and would a BAPP voucher be worth £250 to you. If so the BAPP is a very good card earning at 1.5 Avios.
If you don’t value the voucher at £250 then the Gold card at £160 remains very good. Extra point on any airline spend, extra point on FX, albeit at 3%, and 2500 pints for every £5K spent, upto £25K.
Away from Amex you have Barclays for Avios and their voucher, then Virgin for their voucher if you’d value that, free version on both if you think the vouchers and extra points don’t justify card cost.
What you really need to establish is what you want points for, do you want Avios, Virgin, some other scheme like Hilton or Marriott. Just collecting points will result in a I think Avios or and the BAPP voucher are worthless style post at some future point.
If I was a general non-specific collector (you shouldn’t be) then the Gold Card remains a very good card even when paid for. Between the lounge passes and the Deliveroo credit it can pretty much pay for itself.
Sorry, that is a really good point. To be honest I’m focus on avios and BA at the moment as they usually fly in places I want to go.
I’m planning to go somewhere in South America or Japan next year so the voucher option is tempting.
But can I move from gold to BAPP and get the 2-1 voucher straight away or is that possible only from the free BA amex Card? (or not possible at all?).
You cannot move from Gold to BAPP. They are different products. You could move from Gold to Platinum for example.
You would need a new application. You would be eligible for the new card bonus on the BAPP so long as you’ve not had any BA Amex in the past 2 years.
Don’t forget to log in to your exec club and go via their link for the 60,000 points offer (assuming you can spend the 5k in next three months)
Spending starts from 0 on a new card
Personally I’d say don’t go for the free card as the 2-4-1 is much less useful and you won’t be eligible for that sign on bonus
Thanks! That makes sense.
I guess I will refer my partner to apply for the Gold (he never had one), transfer the points and then close mine and probably move to the free BA.

Oh that’s a good thing to know!
