Forums Payment cards American Express Harvey Nichols offer

CS earlier today informed me it was ending this month. So looks like they’ve recently been given the memo. But echo thoughts above, definitely poor training by Amex on this.

Seems like the decision was taken six months ago and their customer service staff have only just had the memo. Awful service.

Is there a way to get a gift card in electronic form so one can avoid paying for delivery?

For those trying to redeem a physical gift voucher online:

“We are currently unable to take calls through our Online telephone queue. Rest assured, we hope to have the line reopened as soon as possible.

At this time, due to an unforeseen technical issue, the function to accept Gift Cards as payment via our website has been removed.
Our IT team are diligently working to have this reinstated but we cannot confirm a timeframe at this stage.

In the meantime, we are working around this limitation to allow customers to redeem their Gift Card against an online purchase.

If you wish to do so, please place your order as normal and pay by credit/debit card.

You can then get back in touch to provide:

    • your order number
    • images of your Gift Card (back and front), with the pin uncovered
    • the long Gift Card number typed out (found on the reverse of the card)
    • the amount you wish to redeem from the Gift Card (if different to the order/gift card balance)

Once the above details have been received, and following dispatch of your order, we will be able to redeem your Gift Card manually and refund your order by the relevant amount.

Please note that Gift Card cannot be used to purchase more Gift Cards or Gift Experiences.”

Are people finding the £50 HN credit take a little while to come through? Transaction went through just over a week ago but no sign of the credit as yet. (Yes I know that’s not very long to wait but the dining credit came through within 2 days.)

Yep. Taken over a week for me before too. Should be fine. But if you’re worried, take a screenshot of the offer in the Amex app before it disappears, so you can raise a complaint later if needed. But as I said before, should be fine.

I placed an online order on HN on Saturday (28 Jun). It’s a click and collect order, so the order confirmation says that “For Collect in Store orders, your card will be charged once your item(s) arrive.”
The order hadn’t arrived at the store yet. Could this cause an issue in availing the offer if it doesn’t get processed today?
Or is that message just a standard placeholder and the card will be charged today regardless?

I guess you will find out in due course, but why would you leave it so late?

I’m in much the same situation. Ordered online at lunchtime on 26th and nothing yet dispatched so not charged. Couldn’t order any earlier as partly using a previous gift voucher and you can currently neither phone customer services nor use the voucher online, neither of which get any mention on their website (see my post above).

Have they deliberately pulled the £50 gift card from their site just now to avoid a flood of Amex holders ordering them by end of today?

I bought one last week (credit already applied to my card) but the wife can’t find one now, lowest value is £75. Seems very underhanded

Any mention of a HN offer on my card has disappeared! Even the benefits on the experiences app has been removed. This needs to be replaced with something. I will message CS to find out

I got told it was no longer applicable too – but had had no communication about it. I have just been told this very second by an agent that the Dining credit has doubled though to £200 for UK dining in 6 months. When I pressed the agent that that was incorrect – according to the website it was still £100 every 6 months – they confirmed they were wrong and it is still £100 🙂

You received no communication about HN ending as it was always a time limited offer advised to you when you signed up, as indeed are the dining credits.

Every Plat article we have done since last October has said that the HN benefit was ending on 30th June, and we did a full article in October when it was announced. It’s also been discussed in the forum multiple times.

    @JDB
An email went out on 31/10/24 giving details of the new dining credit format, and specifying that cardholders could spend their HN credit until 30/06/25

    Harvey Nichols Lifestyle Credit

We are also pleased to inform you that we have applied a 6-month extension to the Harvey Nichols Lifestyle Credit which means you can now redeem your benefit until 30 June 2025 inclusive.

If you are not already enrolled in the benefit, you can still do so until 30 June 2025. If you have already enrolled in this benefit by saving the offer to your Card, there is no further action from you required. All redemptions should be complete by 30 June 2025.

We will remain committed to providing you with a wide-range of benefits, experiences, service, and rewards in 2025 and beyond. Thank you for your loyalty and Cardmembership.

    Yours sincerely,

I upgraded from ARCC to Platinum and the HB and Dining offers did not show after several days so I called and had them manually added. This took another few days to appear and you still had to activate them on the Offers tab.

HN is no longer advertised for new applications

Still advertised here: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-gb/credit-cards/platinum-card/ albeit it states it expires this month.

Rather shoddily, they still have ‘Harvey Nichols Lifestyle Credit’ as a listed benefit on that page. Sure, if you click ‘read more’ and then also click the tooltip in the relevant section then you can see that it expired on 30/06 but that’s approaching ‘Beware of the Leopard’ levels of prominence.

Datapoint: I ordered something from HN, which was to be delivered by Denby, on 26 June, which cost £115 and was paid for in full at the time. The plan had been to use £50 from a previous gift voucher (which I couldn’t use online), £50 from the credit expiring on 30 June and pay an extra £15.

It wasn’t dispatched by 30 June (at which point I sent the voucher details to HN as explained in a previous post) and the pending charge had disappeared when I checked the Amex website on 30 June. It was then dispatched on 1 July; I feared for my £50!

I’m pleased to say I’ve just checked and both the £50 Amex credit and £50 HN gift voucher credit appear on my Amex statement dated 2 July. Good luck to anyone else who cut it fine.

(Incidentally the item I wanted wasn’t in their sale on 25 June but it was on 26 June at £44.50 less, so all in all a good result for me!).

I got a little annoyed with the various different information on this (was told CS it unambiguously would continue July 2025 onwards, much like others, but also trust Rob has information as he’s vehemently said it won’t). Got told 2x yes and 1x no by three different CS agents various times in last month or two, so escalated it as a formal complaint (bit of a Karen thing to do, but hey… they’re wasting all our time and energy).

Received a response from Amex escalated complaints team confirming that the CS agents were ‘correct’ to tell me that the HN £50 will continue from July 1st 2025 onwards.

I still don’t, if I’m honest, trust this is right. But I do trust that if I spend £50 now (and I did, on July 5th) I’ll either get the credit officially or via a ‘good will gesture’ due to the multiple times I’ve been told it’s still a thing.

But seriously, what a shambolic mess for a company the size of Amex…

I haven’t had any notification of triggering it, but I take that with a pinch of salt as it’s totally random, in my experience, whether both iPhone and email alerts about you utilising a benefit get triggered. Which, along with the ‘might take a day, might take 90’ policy makes it incredibly infuriating and difficult to track whether benefits and bonuses redeem as promised…

you’ll either get a goodwill gesture refund after complaining or will get nothing. You’ll certainly not get standard cashback since the offer is no longer valid, you can check your offers and see that it’s no longer there. No point waiting 90 days really.

If it’s not in your saved offers (and it won’t be) on what planet do you expect to get it, goodwill or otherwise. CArdholders need to take some responsibility.

I believe it is continuing but only for Centurion card holders – not Platinum

On what planet, Ronnie? The planet where multiple customer service representatives and then a complaint escalations manager all confirmed to me that the offer remains in place. Not rocket science, is it? (Pun intended.)

@ceebee – fact that the HN offer was time limited was communicated to you on more than one occasion and clearly stated in the app so I’m not sure why you were endlessly calling agents to see if you could get a different answer. It’s just the same as any other Amex offer.

Now to make a complaint and seek to be compensated because you failed to read the offer terms is precisely why service has declined, offer terms are more strictly applied and things like Shop Small have been cancelled in the UK but not elsewhere where the complain and blame culture hasn’t taken hold.

    6 posts

I see your point, but the wrong information was consistently given to multiple people (as has been posted many times) meaning it wasn’t entirely clear which information was wrong (the time limited notification or the promise it had been extended). It’s entirely plausible that Amex changed their minds and extended the offer, even though it’s contrary to what they’d said. Would seem unusual, but is plausible. To then be told by repeated CS agents and in escalating have it confirmed they were ‘right’ to say so means I think it’s fair enough to expect it to have been the case. What else was I meant to do, say ‘oh I guess no one there including management knows the correct info on something so simple as an HN credit’? In all seriousness, if it’s that chaotic behind the scenes that they can’t get that straight, why would I want them handling anything financial for me? So, I took what I saw as the logical option: they’d changed their plans on HN and just communicated it poorly. Albeit did this knowing there was a good chance they’re just ‘king idiots and talking nonsense, but figured the chat records would cover me regardless…
