Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Help understanding Quote

  • 1 post

    I’m so confused….

I phoned Virgin asking for a quote to purchase Economy Ticket with cash (Heathrow to London Return) and then use my points to upgrade to premium.

    I was quoted:

    £570 for the Economy Tickets
£308 for the Tax on the Premium Ticket
    133,000 Points for the upgrade.

The point cost seems very very high to me so I went to the rewards seat checker webpage after the call and the cost in points to buy tickets outright with points is 134,000 points. So basically exactly the same as the upgrade cost I am being quoted.

Am I being stupid and completely misunderstanding how this works now ? How can the two methods cost the same amount of points?

I’ve upgraded with points from economy to premium in the past and it has always been around 40,000 points.

What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help explain?

The new dynamic pricing makes it difficult to know what you’re going to be charged on any given day (or time of day, sometimes!) I also vaguely recall some complication with upgrading cash tickets under the new system which has been mentioned in the dedicated threads.

It’s not clear which route you want to book?!

Some of the Virgin threads on here might help, e.g.

    https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/has-dynamic-pricing-affected-the-upgrade-with-points-option/

Also, it does seem as though different call handlers will tell you different things (again, a downside of the changes), so it might be worth calling again!
