So I booked a return trip with Avios – I never do! I always book separate legs just in case, but this time I don’t know why I did such a stupid thing… Anyway, I may need to cancel the return leg – am I right in thinking that I have to fly the outbound first, then cancel the return leg outside of the 24h before departure, to get my avios back? Presumably over call centre as I wouldn’t be able to do that online? Or will I?

    Thank you!

No, you need to cancel that return flight more than 24hrs before the outbound after which the Avios all become non refundable. You may be able to do this online.

Really? So that means losing the tax charge for both legs… so annoying!
    Thank you

Assuming you have yet to take the outbound you can call and ask for the PNR to be split so the outbound is on one and the inbound on another.

If you do that before the 24 hour deadline of the outbound then the inbound becomes cancelable or changeable as it will now be on its own separate booking.

Otherwise you can’t cancel the return and get any sort of refund.

Oh yes, will ask to split the booking. I didn’t think about that. Thank you!

Actually I called and I was told there’s no way the return flight can be split into two separate bookings… not sure why.

But I was told that I can change the booking to a one-way ticket for the cost of £35 but I will get £12.5 back. So the change will cost £22.5 to get back 15,000 avios… is it worth it though?

The generally accepted ‘conservative’ valuation of Avios is c.1p each so you’re paying £22.50 cash to get £150 worth of Avios back for future use… a no-brainer I’d say!

That’s what I thought. I started doing what Rob does, which is checking what I’m getting per avios every time I book a reward flight, and you can make those points really fly.

My redemption in F to TYO gave me 30p per Avios!

    On a similar note.
I’m probably going to book an outbound to the far East using a companion voucher at T-355 days and then a couple of weeks later booking the return once again at T-355 days and then calling to get the bookings combined and get a refund of some avios.
Am I correct to assume that in this scenario cancelling the return leg would be a simple exercise?
    Thanks.

Yes, because they don’t actually combine the bookings! You’ll get 50% of the avios refunded but retain 2 separate PNRs, so you can cancel the inbound online if you need to.
