Any ideas how one could set up a direct debit with this card?
Surely a debit card should in the least support debit (eligible) payments? It doesn’t come with an account number and sort code, so I can’t set up a DD for wifi, TV license, child’s swimming classes, DVLA, energy bills etc
Is there a way around this?
DDs come from a bank account, not a debit card. But if you’re a serious collector, you should already be paying for most of those with a points-earning card!
Long live the Hilton Barclaycard because this card is trash in comparison.
Probably.
You don’t earn base points spending with this card, just bonus points.
In Germany/Austria, they have a card with complimentary insurance package and gold status for comparatively less (€72).
In addition, you can earn 5 qualifying nights for every €5,000 you spend on eligible purchases with your Hilton Honors credit card, up to a maximum of 40 (that should keep you in diamond status) qualifying nights. So you apparently can achieve Hilton Honors Diamond status with the reduced requirement of 40 (instead of 60) qualifying nights per calendar year with your Hilton Honors credit card in Germany.
I wonder why…
That German Visa credit card has recently been closed down and no longer exists.

Please do tell.

There’s a new one
If I didn’t have my Barclaycard I’d want that one please, Hilton. Not the pile of crap you’ve offered us in the UK!
+1 @Harrier25

Tell me about it! I am still bitter that my IHG card is no longer available in the UK, even though Creation is not that good. But as far as I understand, no one wants to provide co-branded cards in the UK anymore. 🙁
It’s fairly useless for domestic spending but a decent way of picking up HH points abroad, especially if staying in a Hilton
Just recently purchased Hilton Points using the card and charged USD on it, hoping to earn points and fulfilling the forex spend for welcome offer.
Just got notified that <These are classed as a “payment in relation to financial products” which, as per our Terms and Conditions, are not eligible for earning Hilton Honors Points via your Personal Hilton Honors Debit Card. Any transactions made with these types of merchants after October 9th 2024 will not be eligible for earning Points.>
I was completely unaware of this and I wonder if there is any way around this? Thanks!

Odd. I would raise this with them because – whilst this rule is there for a reason, to stop you buying premium bonds or paying into a savings account – hotel points are a ‘product’ as far as I’m concerned.

I’m grateful for this, and they should be more transparent with this.

Just gone into my most recent IHG Points dot com purchase, which was processed on 3/9/2024 and it’s described as.
“Business Services Not Elsewhere Classified” – which is MCC7399
That’s particular code isn’t a payment in relation to a financial product in my mind. Has the MCC changed?
@Andrew. unfortunately, what’s in your mind and logic don’t count for anything here! Currensea is a small but nimble operator and these products are not that profitable, so one can be sure they will block all sorts of points earning transactions that fall outside the ordinary.
…and that’s the reason why no one should spend on this card. Pay the £160 subscription for Gold tier, if you don’t have it via Amex or a Hilton Barclaycard and use your Amex, Virgin Atlantic and Hilton Barclaycard (if you have one) to earn your Hilton points. In the example used above, I would buy the points using Curve with my Hilton Barclaycard linked
I don’t know about others but I’m only spending to get the welcome bonus, and it may be useful for spending at non-UK Hiltons.

It’s only described as “Points” – can’t see the MCC code

Reply from them:
“Buying Points has always been classed as a “Payments in relation to financial products;” within the categories of personal spend that is ineligible for points. We did not change our policy on October 9th however, as a gesture of goodwill, we allowed any customers who had bought points before this time to retain the awarded points.I’m sorry you feel cheated of your Points, however, we have never advertised anywhere that Points could be earned when using the card to buy Hilton Honors Points directly and the card has been designed for day to day usage, travel spend, and hotel stays.”

No and precisely why this card is an absolute waste of time to anyone except those who perhaps want gold status on the cheap (although I dont think it would surprise many if Hilton plan to scrap free breakfast for gold). So then it makes you wonder what the attractions are with these cards. The fact there’s a fee for both is just laughable in itself. These are DEBIT cards.
Absurd.
Why? If you want a new hotel credit/debit card at all in 2024 the reality is that it’s not going to be like the old days as it is so hard to design a commercially viable product. For other stuff you’ll need to buy Finish Rinse Aid.
