Trying to work out the best use of cards whilst on hols in the US. I have Curve, Revolut and Chase (as well as the “pointless” Jaja ex Post Office no fx fee card). I hold Amex, VA and Hilton cards too.
Most spend will on the cards but looking for suggestions on the best approach to maximise points on credit card spend and avoid/minimise fx fees.
Appreciate any thoughts
Chase is brilliant for getting cash from ATMs – as well an excellent exchange rate, you don’t pay a fee to use a Chase ATM.
For purchases, its very much a question of what works best for you.
If you are still in your first year, you might want to use Chase for purchases to get 1% back.
The USD is comparatively weak right now, so you could pre load Revolut with some USD at $1.236/£
You could use VA or Hilton with Curve to earn points.
Bear in mind that if you have the free Curve card, you are limited to £1k spend in a month before they hit you with additional fees. You could use your Post Office card for anything in excess of £1k. Also, don’t use your Curve card at the weekend. See https://help.curve.com/how-does-curve-save-me-money-abroad-HyquHdnUu#
Probably don’t use Amex unless you are struggling to hit a spending target. Their Forex fees are too high. Unless you have the Amex Gold card. This gives double points on foreign travel, and a 50% bonus for spending £5k, so you might be buying MR points at a penny each.
