I am going to India (yay) mostly to see friends I know in the south introduce my wife and little kid to everyone I knew way back (when I taught at a school down there). So that’ll be nice, and accomodation will be sorted for that part.
Does anyone know good hotels in Mumbai? That’s where we fly into and we were thinking to spend a few days there before we head on. I have now spent over the 6k requirement on the amex platinum…so should in theory have £400 amex travel money. Any ideas of places? With our little toddler, we won’t be able to hit the city early in the morning and keep going till we drop in the short hours, so having a hotel that’s a good home-base to still do things would be ideal. After 2-3 hours of exhausting our little one (read:ourselves) out in mumbai, we don’t want to be stuck in a hotel with just the TV and the mini bar. Maybe all we can hope for is a good pool and dining experience, but any hotels with further amenities would be really interesting. thanks for any help guys
The Taj. Book the old hotel, not the Tower.
Don’t bother booking a taxi; just go to one of the prepaid taxi booths when you enter the public arrivals area. You can use Uber/Ola too, but finding their pickup zones felt more stressful then just grabbing somebody in the arrivals area. Nite this is the public area rather the
An the hawkers around baggage claim.
The Taj has a superb pool and I’ve seen small children around the pool with their parents.
There are some good restaurants in the hotel, but I had a terrible meal at the Indian restaurant. They range from very expensive to eye-wateringly so, but there are plenty of restaurants very close to the Taj. You can get around the city easily with Uber but I found Ola more reliable. You don’t need an Indian number to use Ola.
JW Marriott Juhu.
Lovely kids playroom and a kids pool with a slide. There’s also a fish pond and activities like feeding the fish. If they still get bored, there’s direct access to a public beach. Obviously has the lounge, spa, restaurants and is close to the city.
The Taj is for old people 🤪
We really liked Taj the Trees Mumbai, brand new and great hotel. Bit far from the touristy bits but the cabs weren’t expensive and the traffic was fine the whole stay, nice and green and modern.
I usually stay at Taj Lands End which I like – . Nice view of the sea though it’s a bit old fashioned I guess.
We stayed at the Taj Tower – really couldn’t fault it (the rooms were on the small side, but spotless service and we had an amazing view of the Gateway of India). You do get access to the pool in the old section (which is great). I think the tower rooms are half price compared to the Original building.
Super well located for a first time visitor to Mumbai. We used Uber when we weren’t walking.

Curious if you feel a bit marooned at Taj The Trees, my wife likes the look at it, but I wonder what there is to do (while staying there)?
+1 for the Taj Palace, book a club room in the old building and enjoy.
+1 for the JW Marriott in Juhu- the hotel is beautiful, the breakfast/ brunch is amazing, lots of space for children to enjoy, nice club lounge (where, if you need, the nighttime canapés can make a meal- although in Mumbai I’d always choose to eat in a restaurant), we tried a couple of the restaurants after long shopping days and they were pretty good and not too mental price wise (by western standards), and finally fairly easily commutable to wherever you want/need to go.

Depends upon what you want to do in Mumbai. You’d be an hour from Colaba where you catch the ferry to Elephanta Island (my favourite destination in Mumbai as a tourist), and 30 minutes plus from a bunch of other stuff. You’d will certainly get to experience the chaos of Mumbai traffic. But then you are much closer the spectacular countryside to the east of Mumbai that I’ve only ever seen from a plane. I’ve considered day trips but the two hours of travel just navigating the city has put me off.
