Greetings!
Scenario to be solved is:
OH and I each have BA(E)C accounts (Silver FWIW but only to end March).
We are the only 2 members of our HHA with BA.
I have oodles more Avios than OH.
He has no boostable Avios.
We have outward reward bookings on Qatar which cost me 180K Avios. I still have plenty of Avios to get us back again once seats are released.
However, OH has 117K Avios (and so would need 65K more for the return seats at 180K for both of us). We want to clear out his Avios and remain focused on me being the only collector (‘cos…reasons).
What are some cunning wheezes whereby we can use the Avios OH already has towards booking our rtn journey for 180K? I’ve tried tinkering but I can’t get hold of his 117K without paying BA £50 for the privilege (no thanks, I’ve already cut & run after the recent debacle). QR doesn’t play with HH accounts like BA does, so I can’t snaffle them whilst booking on QR whilst adding my own Avios to pay the balance.
We could book separately with our QR accounts but that’s risky if seats don’t manifest themselves at the same time etc. And OH would still be left with an even more useless 27k Avios.
Has anyone any bright ideas please? TIA:-)
I have >40k Amex MRs but it seems I can’t give them to OH.
117k avios is enough to get you somewhere nice on another trip, especially if you consider Iberia.
Or – can you split your return journey on QR and use his avios for one of the legs? Should be easy enough to do, especially if you can plan in a short stopover in DOH to avoid any mishaps with delays or cancellations.
You can route his Avios via Finnair to your BA account for €10. If you’ve not got Finnair accounts you’ll have to wait (from memory) 90 days after setting them up, but as long as you’ve got oodles of points as you say that’s of no concern.

Thank you for the suggestion. A different trip is a valid option but not one I favour right now. Your second suggestion could work but am I right in thinking you mean I should make one booking 2 pax from origin to Doha and then 2 separate bookings Doha back home? It’s the separate bookings that concerns me. At the time of booking, I could grab one seat and then the other goes before I can repeat the process. I suppose I could do it via QR chat and an agent; I haven’t had the nightmare experiences that others have. They have always been helpful, once I can get the chat to start.

Aha! I do indeed have a Finnair a/c. I’m not sure I’ve done one for OH though. Still, a great suggestion, so thanks very much 😉

As I hadn’t signed OH up for Finnair when I did mine, I’m going with your cunning plan but in the other direction. I’ve signed him up now and will transfer enough (abt 65K) from me to him to pay the 180K flight & book in his name. Brilliant – and thanks again for sharing that nugget.
