Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club how to use voucher to pay for reward flight saver

  • 15 posts

    Hello everyone,

I was downgraded on a Avios companion voucher Club world flight last week and was given a £600 (for both travellers) voucher as a customer relations recovery.

I know its not enough and Mennens should apply, but if I’m stuck with it, then I’d like to use it towards another companion avios flight.

There does not seem a space for voucher in booking an avios flight.

Does anyone know whether I can use this voucher to pay the reward flight saver fees?

Is it a physical voucher? Are there any Ts and Cs on it anywhere? You may be able to use it over the phone if you get an amenable agent.

I think as long as you didn’t sign any kind of waiver you could still claim your downgrade reimbursement as this shouldn’t be affected by a goodwill gesture.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be able to advise you on the downgrade, but in short, you should be entitled to 75% downgrade reimbursement on what you paid for that downgraded leg, and it would be for each passenger (even if you used a companion voucher to get the companion ‘free’).

You can only use the e-voucher on a cash booking, and they have a 1 year ‘book by’ expiry. And once you apply a voucher, you can’t use avios to reduce the cash component further, nor, to use avios to upgrade the cabin (even if avios seats are available). I had the same scenario last week, wanted to use e-vouchers to pay for a PE cash flight, and then wanted to use avios to upgrade to club world, but could only upgrade with cash (even though there was CW availability with avios).

I’d pursue your 75% anyway – the £300pp should be on top as a CR ( and based on what I’ve seen on FT they’re handing these out like sweets at the moment anyway!)

Can’t see why this would be – try just book the WT+ online using the voucher and then call up and do the UuA to CW and pay cash for the extra fees . Worst case you’ve got the 24hr cooling off period to cancel the whole thing

Maybe I had an agent that didn’t fully understand what I wanted. It’s just that you can’t apply avios to a cash booking to further reduce the cost, if you have already use an e-voucher, so I just presumed that when the agent said they could only upgrade me with cash, that it’s because you can’t apply avios to upgrade either, if you have already used an e-voucher.

I ended up using the voucher for something else, as I was also worried about how difficult it would be to get a refund of my voucher, even if I cancelled within 24 hours.

I believe it’s correct that you can’t use a voucher and reduce the initial cash cost using Avios. but a subsequent UuA should be OK.

I don’t know if they’ve fixed it now but there was an issue for a long while that booking and upgrading in one transaction resulted in a higher cash price vs booking the WT+ online and then calling for the upgrade. I find it easier to do that then have to give them all the details of the flight I want anyway!

Thanks @SamG, good to know for future reference.
