I was waiting to book a domestic flight between Osaka and Tokyo. Today the redemption has jumped from 7500 to 10500 more than 40% increase.
Which airline?
JAL using avios.
Yes, looks like CX and JAL short-haul and medium-haul flights just got devalued again. Others seem to be not affected.
Just booked Osaka to Hong Kong with asia miles on Cathay Pacific and that was 10,000 miles – acceptable for a 4hour flight but Osaka to Tokyo seems not good value!
I think the challenge is in these regions it’s well known via the big local blogs that Avios can be a good deal for these short flights and many of the local transferable currencies (citi etc) are quite frequently included in a 40% bonus offer when transferring to Qatar Avios
So the local carriers likely agree with BA/Avios to push up the rates to bring them more on par with the local schemes

So over the course of only 6 years of so, these redemptions have increased from 4500, to 6000, then to 7500 and now to 10500 Avios.
The fact there’s either zero or very low taxes to pay (a couple of pounds) makes them very useful for flexibility though as it allows free or nearly free cancellation.
With 1 GBP around 180 to 185 Yen recently, cash bookings are probably cheaper if flexibility is not required.
I was looking at JAL domestic redemptions last week and thought the same.
Cash fares, especially in J, are so low so it doesn’t make sense to book with Avios.

I was looking economy class for next year, cash price was around £65 vs 7500 avios with no tax. So with flexibility it dose make sense to book using avios. But not anymore with this devaluation.
