Good morning from the Hyatt Centric in Malta.
This ended up being a slightly longer missive than planned (apologies) thus thought it better placed here under the Hyatt forum. It was supposed to be a few headline points for anyone considering this but I got a little carried away…..
Reasonably new hotel, finished in the last few months I think and it shows, which is meant positively.
Upgraded to their 1-bed suite as a Globalist upon check in, decent size (& decent sized balcony which is long but space for r decent oversized seats and 2 tables) with a separate shower, 2 toilets and a free standing bathtub. 2 separate sinks.
Nespresso pod machine along with a kettle (English Organic teabags) + pasteurised milk. 3 separate hanging rails (not proper wardrobes note) with 4 decent sized draws for socks etc; for those who value these things, a good stack of stealable hangers….
Separate lounge with a table + 4 seats; bed was a proper super king-size and pleasingly firm with no issues sleeping last night. Toiletries are from Bee Kind.
Whilst the balcony was/is decent and more space than expected from the pics, you aren’t coming here for the views. All there is on one side is a building site, and from the other (my room) fronts on to the Hyatt Regency and Voco (also newly built in ’25). For those familiar with the Regency, that at least has some rooms with a Pjazza and/or sea view. That remains at category 3 vs. the 2 for this new Centric.
Breakfast was a decent spread, usual mix of hot buffet products to compile a full English, albeit seemingly boiled Cumberland sausages, but the best scrambled eggs I’ve had in years. Also some Maltese / local accompaniments if one fancies a hybrid. Good spread of cold cuts, cheese and fruits. 2x Lavazza coffee machines along with a more formal looking Barista style behind the bar (brand unknown).
Has a very decent lounge open 10AM-10PM, canapes and a selection of alcoholic drinks from 5-7PM. Nice outside area as well, but again not much to look at. I got the sense last night a fair few groups were perhaps stocking up absent a later meal, & there was sufficient to achieve that aim should one so wish…
Reasonable sized gym, with 2 treadmills, a CrossFit trainer, 1 rowing machine and 1 bike; selection of free weights and actually quite a lot of space for freestyle training and yoga. Ceiling height sufficient for me to use my rope without issue. There’s a spa and indoor swimming pool (+ hot tub) which I haven’t used yet, but certainly looks okay.
The main area where this ‘fails’ imho vs the Regency is the pool area. Much smaller and a very harassed, tiny pool bar in comparison. Perhaps there were a lot of non-staying guests as it was Sunday but still feels smaller than it should be for a hotel of this size.
St Julian’s won’t appeal to all (particularly given it’s proximity to Paceville) and there are a lot, LOT, of new developments at varying stages thus I suspect we’ll spend more time in Valletta if and when we do return.
That being written, not too far away (15/20-minute, although car advisable in this heat with Bolt very prominent on the island) are some very decent restaurants along St George’s Bay.
Is it typical in Malta to sell pool passes to non-guests? I seem to recall from previous reviews the Intercontinental sharing a ground level pool with the Holiday Inn Express, but the rooftop IC hotel being one that sells access.
