I’ve just had an IHG 2-night stay in Europe cancelled for a date in November 2023 (so many months away from being “walked”). This was booked in January this year.
As ever, rates have increased sizeably on alternative properties since my booking, even the IHG one. Do I have any sway in getting them to rebook me in the alternative property (or comping breakfast, or anything)?
I know the specific T&Cs answer will be I don’t have a leg to stand on but wonder if anyone has got anything from this before.
There may be a breach of contract.
There are some really good posts on here somewhere by @meta showing how to make IHG respond to this in a satisfactory manner. Try older IHG threads, or cancellations. Someone might come along and remember exactly where it was. Also check the IC Ambasciatori thread as I feel it’s referred to there.
Which property? Has a reason been given? I would kick up a fuss. It’s a contract.
Thanks both – the hotel is closing for renevations. I can’t find much from searching this forum but I will continue looking.
I’ve just had a support assistant e-mail to say he’s “made things right for me” by cancelling my stay and refunding points back to my account. What more could I ask!?
Tell them that’s not enough. Did you check the Ambasciatori thread?
Send an email to CEO, Keith Barr in the first instance reminding them of the contract. UK account and they have UK service address, although they might argue if points booking that it’s Georgia, US jurisdiction.
Has IHG just amended their ts and cs just to allow them to get away with this sort of behaviour without any comeback? They’re removing the contract basis that would allow you to challenge them for IHG or their hotels cancelling any bookings made going forward with IHG. Leaving you high and dry having possibly made other noncancellable arrangements, facing lack of alternatives or only much higher priced alternative hotels.
Putting @BJ’s and @NorthernLass’s comments on the other thread where IHG has now put into their ts and cs that they can cancel anyone’s points booking if IHG decides at any time the IHG Loyalty member was able to book at too good a rate… It looks as though if hotel rates increase after the booking has been made, IHG is going to pull this one.
So, dynamic pricing only benefits IHG and the customer can’t count on any benefit.
Are IHG and their hotels going to start doing this with cash bookings, too, soon?
The points prices jump around so much I don’t know how they would ever keep on top of that! It’s rather astonishing that they would be prepared to alienate members like that, but then again …

Keith Barr has left the business to spend more time with his family. Was in the news last week.
