Some interesting thoughts on here from Hannah
I’d not expect Guardian to produce an interesting interview with her.
Guardian business articles can be reasonably good.
This one is shite though.
This is almost the definition of a puff piece. It reads more like a “This is your life” than anything of any content like her views on where she sees the UK market heading.

Maybe that’s because she hanna gotta clue.
It would also appear the journalist hadn’t done much research to identify how the UK business has been underperforming in the 12 months since she has been in charge.

Centurions can now refer a friend.
After years of having ‘secret’ spend targets (£250k+ and allegedy in the ‘right’ product categories only), a desire for fee income means that anyone who knows one and will pony up the joining fee is in. No prior Amex relationship needed.
Couple with other changes and you could be correct.
I’d run it myself but can’t face the pay cut.
Where’s NigelthePensioner when we need someone to refer us…
Couple that with other changes and you could be correct.
Jeez, thats very optimistic.
Should be worried? I am eligible for plat bonus and holding out based on previous comment by @Rob.
Yikes – I wonder what the news could be? Perhaps one (or more) of the following?
– Slashing the MR earn rate for Platinum & Gold
– Annual fee increase on the Platinum card (the gold already increased last year)
– BAPP now requiring £15k for the Companion Voucher
– MR to Avios conversion no longer 1:1
– Removal of Priority Pass as a benefit for Platinum
– Can only hold max 2 Amex card per person at one time
What are your bets on?
One introductory bonus per person per lifetime.
One introductory bonus per person per lifetime.
Exactly how is that going to help them drive business?
Yep, so big sign up bonuses. Stopping fee refund postponed to Dec. Now you know what to do.
One introductory bonus per person per lifetime.
Exactly how is that going to help them drive a crazy number of sign-ups by Christmas?!
Interesting. Mega sign up bonuses incoming
clearly coupled with fee increases
Do we reckon for all-fee bearing cards or just the Plat?
One introductory bonus per person per lifetime.

Amex don’t seem all that interested in driving business anymore.
Whoops just applied for a gold card after 2 yrs off – hopefully not a mistake!
Interested to understand what their plan is and how this ties in with refunds being delayed. You’d think any increase in sign up bonuses would want that policy in place to stop too much churning without full annual fees paid
Amex don’t seem all that interested in driving business anymore.
They are. It’s just that they’re interested in driving business away.
clearly with fee increases
Fee increase might not drive much net profit increase. They might need to increase benefits for people to see ‘value’, otherwise they will see more cancellations.
There is an argument to drive volume of card holders, if amex can get into wallets (electric or real) then more chance people will use it for transactions and gain through transaction revenue. Given cost of living increase, everyone is spending more even if buying the same thing, the logic of having more card holders make more sense than increasing fees and earn higher income via a lower card holder base.
