Forums Payment cards American Express Is the amex gold the best card?

  • 10 posts

My husband and I have been using Amex gold off and on for the last few years, and I’m not sure what the latest is for use or if it’s the best for us.
I signed up in July 2022 and then cancelled a year later after referring my husband, so we could get the referral points, plus the sign up offer.
He’s now due to cancel his card and it’s ’my turn’ again, but I’m wondering if I’m going to get any sort of bonus this time. I think I’m seeing that you need to not have had a personal card in the last 24 months. Does this apply for me having the secondary card when my husband was the main card holder?
We do try to use the card where we can so we can get as many points as possible. I like the sound of the BA card, but I’m not sure I can use it for the companion voucher? We pretty much only fly aerlingus as we do long haul flights (other than easyJet for European trips)

You can still get a bonus when you’re a supplementary cardholder provided you meet all the other criteria.

Also, you can use the companion voucher on Aer Lingus as well as Iberia and of course BA.

Best to get the Gold for the free first year and sign up for BAPP when there’s a good deal IMO, although saying that I’m not sure what the terms are on the BAPP card these days with regards to getting bonuses when you have the Gold.

No bonus for free BA card if you have gold and would stop you getting a gold bonus in the future. The free BA voucher is economy only and you don’t mention what class you normally fly.

If the Gold has the better sign up bonus then I would get the Gold and then If you can 1. have enough spend for the gold bonus, 2. have enough to spend for the BA voucher after that 3. don’t mind the credit rating hit, apply for the BA card shortly after. work on the BA voucher.

Cancel both when it is your husband’s turn. Your 24 month break starts when you have cancelled both cards. Then you have the benefits that come with gold and try out the BA card.

If the BA bonus is better then maybe apply for that, you can apply for gold quickly after but that would be just for the benefits (if you use them), as you will be spending on the BA card. (assume gold is still free for the 1st year).

It is not clear how much you value the other benefits from Gold, but if you only want avios then the earning rates are the similar day to day.

The companion voucher is only useful for you if 1. you fly economy 2 you can find availabilities easily on the routes you want to fly on aerlingus (or willing to be v flexible)

Thanks, didn’t realise we could use the companion voucher on aerlingus. Which website is it usually booked through/how does it work? I’ve not explored it too much as I didn’t think we’d ever be able to use it.
We just fly economy, and are fairly flexible as to when we travel (for the next 2 years anyway until we have school holidays to work around!)

If only someone, back in the mists of time, had thought to start a travel-based website where they published detailed articles (let’s say 3 every day) that explained the ins and outs of the points collecting hobby, covering topics such as credit card sign up bonuses, 241 vouchers, redeeming points on different airlines, etc. Just think what a useful resource that would be by now.

    As useful as Scott’s Tots.
