Hi, Planning a few days in KL, what part of town is a good place to stay? Or should I base my self near to kl sentral station and use public transport to get to places?

If you’ll be going from and to KLIA then it’s hard to beat the convenience of Sentral. Otherwise Bukit Bintang/KLCC.

When in KL, we usually use Grab to get around everywhere (SE Asia’s answer to Uber). It’s cheap, reliable, and opens up options around where you can stay.

That said, we often are only in KL for a few days at a time, which means we tend to stay at Hilton KL, as it is right by the airport express train (KLIA Ekspres) at Kl Sentral, so we can get to and from the airport really easily (and, I think, in-town check in has finally returned for some carriers) and there are plenty of food/shopping options nearby.

+1 to the Hilton next to KI Sentral. We went with the kids (10 & 12) for 2 nights a few months ago and it was perfect. So easy to get to from the airport, good rooms, great service and location. We used Grab for getting out to Batu Caves and the metro for around the city for Petronas Towers, shopping and eating streets etc. Very enjoyable.

We visited in March and visiting again next March.
We love KL. we stayed near the KLCC. There are various hotels around there. Hotels are much cheaper than Bangkok, Singapore etc.
The Airport is a fair way from where you will probably stay, but Grab is reasonable, and as others have said, the express train takes you straight to Sentral where you can then get the metro to KLCC.

We have stayed at the Mandarin oriental probably the cheapest MO out of the portfolio , again four seasons , cheapest FS in there portfolio , both next to Suria KLCC / P towers , also stayed at the W which is close by too

Out of the 3 we preferred the FS,very smart Indeed, the W was nice but we had a room a few floors up from the pool and it was mega noisy, they gave us extra points as they could only downgrade room due to occupancy so sucked it up.

MO was a little dated , great service though

Grab is so so cheap there, far cheaper than Thailand , we did grab for every trip as it’s so cheap.

You are spoiled for choice for 5 star properties in KL. I wouldn’t recommend the FS, feels more like a luxury office block rather than a hotel. The service is completely unremarkable. Given it’s notably more expensive than the likes of the MO, I don’t see the premium as worth it. Nice bar though with fantastic cocktails.

    I really like the GH.

Any suggestions for family friendly ones? A splash pool at a minimum!

We really enjoyed the Ritz-Carlton in KL a couple of years back- probably not the very best location but there was plenty of stuff within walking distance and Grab was super cheap for getting around.

The main things that we liked was that the rooms were comfortable and beautifully appointed (even the couch was comfortable- I managed to fall asleep on it one night 🙈), almost all the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and would go above and beyond to help us. Not the be all and end all, but the club lounge was also really nice.

I’d say MO is extremely family friendly. They have a kids club from what I could remember and they also had a small kids pool.

The buffet was awesome and the bar food on an evening was extremely reasonable. The food at the MO in general was what I would class as extremely affordable.

Yes MO came to mind for me too. Shangri-La is normally exceptionally child-friendly in Asia but no splash pool at the KL one. The Hilton/Meridien share a fun pool with a nice slide but I don’t think there’s much of an offering in the hotels beyond that.

We’ve stayed at the Hilton by Sentral a few times and it has always been great: good rooms, good with kids, hotel staff were excellent, the pool (as other have said) has a slide! And good transport links around KL and even out to the Batu Caves and other places out of town.

We did also do a single night (leaving our bags in storage at the Hilton) in the “space hotel” near Chinatown. We had a private room with 4 pods in it, which our 6 and 4 year old kids loved.

Don’t particularly agree with the sentiment that Hilton Sentral is that ‘amazing’ of a hotel. Maybe compared to other Hiltons in the world and its price point. But its pretty old now and there is not much you can walk to from there. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are there for 1/2 nights then the KLIA express is handy.

There are so many brand new 5* hotels popping up across the city where you can get a superior product/service in a more vibrant area. Independent travel agents can access some of these at aggressive rates (recently become one so been keenly searching places I’m very familiar with!). Happy to have a search if anyone is interested.
