I have no idea how the Virgin Atlantic dynamic pricing algorithm works, but it clearly isn’t just related to the cash price. One concern voiced when Virgin moved to this system was last-minute business (Upper) pricing would be super-high. Looking at Fri/Sat/Sun coming, there are sub-100k tickets in Upper to a handful of places, including Atlanta and Mumbai. There is some saver priced return availability too, a few days later.
eg London to Atlanta, 18th – 22nd

Taxes, fees and charges
£1,026.72Interesting. It’s an advantage to the airline to be able to dump excess capacity without potentially cannibalising last minute full fare corporate bookings so it shows they have considered the implications of the change to dynamic pricing a bit more than many thought.
As you point out though, it’s useless if there aren’t suitable returns available.
