Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Locked account – from December

  • 5 posts

So my account was locked at the end of December, got an email from BA and was able to get in with a password reset and code. Logged in again late last month to make a redemption booking to get the dreaded:

“Your account is temporarily unavailable. We have locked your account temporarily to keep it safe and secure. For more information please refer to the email or letter you received from us.”

I phoned up and they said it would take 7-10 business days to unlock the account and I just had to wait for an email. It’s now past that time and the account is still locked. I phoned up again yestreday and was just told “Someone will get back to you, just not sure when.”
The whole openendedness of it with no one i can actually contact or discuss it with is very frustrating!

Any advice or tips on a way to speed things along? Have reached out on twitter but just got the “Sorry you just have to wait.”

I’ve basically missed out redemption flights i’ve needed to book as they can’t do it over the phone when my account is locked. I can shift holiday plans around slightly so if it gets unlocked in the next 24/48hours or so we might be okay but it’s not ideal. Have got half a million avios waiting to be spent that I can’t do anything with!

My wife’s account is also locked so we can’t use her account either.

This happened to a lot of people including myself. There’s an email address in the comments that worked for some people, I think it was BA loyalty. I never received the email or letter when it happened to me.

Why do you think it is locked ?

Thanks, yeah I tried that email after finding info on FlyerTalk about it. If I didn’t need to book the redemption I’d be more relaxed about it. I know it’s happened to loads of people and gets sorted originally,, the timing just really sucks.

No idea, seems form FlyerTalk that lots of accounts get locked all the time. I haven’t done anything dodgy unless buying Avios from BA to top up my account counts!

Last time a password reset fixed it but it didn’t this time. Apparently they have to manually send me the password reset email but who knows.

Their IT is currently pretty shocking although apparently it’s partly due to moving to new system.

I guess I just have to keep waiting and hope it gets fixed eventually.

Do you have it linked to Award Wallet? Once I stopped syncing mine with BA, the account stopped getting locked out. Just a thought.

Thanks, that’s a good suggestion. I did and have now deleted it in case that is a cause

Another tip: I typically use a password manager that generates long and unique passwords. BA will accept these at the password reset stage, but never allow you to log in again with your newly reset password. Shorter/less complex passwords seem to be OK. I’ve not fathomed what the catch is in terms of length or complexity, but unfortunately this means a less secure approach would seem to suit BA’s IT better. Twelve characters isn’t too long, and at least some special characters like ‘!’ are acceptable.

I received a mail today which seemed to be a pre-warning that 2FA is being launched for website AND app log-in. It asked me to ensure contact details on my account were up to date.

I’ve had a number of log-in issues lately, especially in the app. These were temporarily resolved with a delete and reinstall of the app . (Android)

Hopefully there are some improvements coming, but I am naturally cynical there will be a whole lot of pain when the changes are first introduced.

To @memesweepers point- I use a password manager for 95% of my passwords. BA is stored but never works via the app. I’ve therefore kept it more unique but more memorable than most since I am always having to manually enter it!
