Forums Payment cards American Express London restaurant recommendation for amex dining credit

  • 29 posts

We are heading off to London in Feb to see abba voyage. We will be staying at the gantry and want to use the platinum dining credit for lunch before the concert. As we are arriving at Waterloo we don’t have to find a place near where we are staying. Ideally looking for a set lunch menu for the 3 of us and enjoy seafood or Asian (Japanese or Thai especially) Any recommendations?

Not exactly on point for cuisine but Allegra in Stratford is very decent and near-ish abba. £150 credit would cover most of the set meal for 3

I’d say Roka ( Have had the tasting menu before, was around £80 a head)
Theres one in Mayfair so shouldn’t be too difficult to get to from Waterloo

Hakkasan (Chinese) or J Sheekey (Seafood) are both great and have good value set menus that will set you back around £150 for three.

Just double check that Roka Mayfair is included in the dining credit as it wasn’t in December. Roka Aldwych is, although recent reviews seem to have been poor.

Wherever you choose, make sure it’s not Hakkasan – awful & loud music, diners who wanted to be seen rather than fed, a dated 2000s aesthetic and overpriced food. It was like Dubai had decamped to a basement. We left after about 5 minutes.

Well, that was just one of the recommendations offered and to be avoided. I also wouldn’t go to Sheekey’s which was nice once but now both the food and service is very hit and miss. There is the odd suited manager who seem unable to ensure proper service. They (the charmless and snotty ‘greeters’) will also try to stuff you with a rubbish table even when the place is empty pre-theatre.

I’ve been to Sushisamba in Covent Garden a couple of times before I got the Platinum card and enjoyed it very much.

It’s not Asian or seafood, and I don’t know if they have a set menu, but it’s genuinely amazing – Duck & Waffle. The food is amazing, and it’s one of the few restaurants with spectacular London views where the food actually matches the views.

I’ve been there 4 times now (it was already one of my favourite restaurants here, before it popped up on the AMEX offer), and the food is delicious. For 3 of you, if it goes over the £150 limit, it won’t be by much, unless you order loads of booze!

Umu is the gold standard for your requirement.

I got food poisoning at Duck and Waffle just after pandemic and they refunded me in the end (I was possibly not the only one complaining). I am not going back.

I second UMU but the dining credit will not cover very far for three people ( used mine last year there).

With regards to Hakkasan, I have been going there for over 15 years and cannot fault the food, still one of the best, if not the best, modern Chinese in town. Yes it can be loud and dark, but I find the design of the place still valid, albeit dot as sensational as when it first opened. I never been at lunch, so not sure about the atmosphere, but I know a fellow Platinum Cardholder that used his credit there for lunch and was very happy.

As a different, not Asian option, Pollen Street Social can offer a great option for lunch ( I think they have actually reduced the prices recently).

Hutong in the Shard has excellent northern chinese food. Often restaurants in landmark locations have aweful food, as people go there for the view, but this is the exception.

Hi, I am hoping to go to the Charlotte street Roka. Can you tell me how long it took for the credit to pay out pls. Thanks

My experience was that it is very quick. From memory, when I used it at Roka Charlotte Street, the credit was on my account day after the charge hit it. It was certainly no more than 2 days.

Another recommendation from the list for me is Sabor. Spanish food, one star michelin. Don’t believe they do set lunch menus, so this may be on the pricier side. My very strong recommendation is to eat downstairs by the counter looking at the chefs doing their magic. No reservations, so come early, enjoy a drink at the bar before sitting down for some really nice food.

Yes, we’re “life-long” Sabor fans, go every couple of months.
You can also order off a shorter menu at the bar for a vermút/tortilla sort of combo. Also note that,
as from the reopening later this week, the bar area will be significantly reduced, but will be
replaced by a gorgeous 8-10 person booth which would be fabulous for small groups.

thanks someone else on another thread mentioned 3 weeks which would be annoying. I guess all I can do is hope for the best.

I’d have to disagree with this. I’ve been there a number of times and every time the quality of food was subpar – for me it just felt really like style over substance. I was actually there yesterday hoping to have their Peking duck, but they said they didn’t have any!

Hakkasan and Roka are both ok, but then again I wouldnt necessary go to them if it wasn’t for the dinig credit. The only Asian option on the list I’d recommend is Som Saa, which does nice Thai food

I had missed that Som Saa was on this list – thanks for the prompt @kevinchoi! I am overdue a visit…

I had dinner at Roka Charlotte Street in December 2023. Went for the premium taster menu for 2. Would certainly not recommend it to anyone and I certainly won’t go back. When the waitress advised against upgrading to the Wagyu beef option, I should have realised it would not be good. Staff were dismissive, food was average and we both did not feel particularly well after the meal.

I wouldn’t recommend Roka. The dining credit was on my account within a couple of days.

How about Ivy Asia at St Paul’s? Not far from Waterloo…

A little bit of a fun experience would be Ivy Asia St Paul’s. food and drink is always good here and great dessert. But if you want good sushi try Kaia in the Ned.
