Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club London to Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) – best way to use my Avios as no more Beijing

  • 8 posts

    I created a post before and had some really useful replies but now that BA are no longer flying to Beijing its made it much more complicated.
    As I have Avios and an upgrade voucher I want to fly as far as possible using that and in Business class, lots of flights are via Frankfurt or Türkiye but then Id be getting very limited benefit from my Avios and Voucher.
    So I think my only real choice now is via Hong Kong but wanted to ask some experts here in case Im missing anything obvious?
    Im flying next August hence the cant fly Beijing 🙂

    @tomfromlondon – it’s generally easier to get reward seats to Shanghai vs Hong Kong and Shanghai is good hour nearer to Ulaanbaatar plus you would get to visit the newer version of HK which makes the older version look rather provincial and dreary. That said, the weather in both cities will be quite oppressive in August. Unfortunately, with the requirement to use the CV, none of your options are ideal whereas if you just want to use Avios, you have other options such as QR and AY.

    Yep but you cant fly direct to Ulaanbaatar from Shanghai so it would then mean getting a connecting flight from there.
    CV = The voucher?
    QR = Qatar?
    Not sure about AY.
    Sorry a tad new to this as usually we just look where we can go via Avios rather than using it to get to specific place

    Yes, sorry I had wrongly assumed there would be flights from Shanghai. Unfortunately, a southern gateway like HK leaves you a long and potentially expensive trip as Ulaanbaatar has relatively few flights, most of which are from more northerly Asian cities. Yes, CV is companion voucher, QR is Qatar Airways and AY is Finnair – you can use Avios on both, but not the CV. QR is very good and AY offers good connectivity to Asia and a decent business class product but the current inability to fly over Russia makes routings much longer than hitherto.

    Much appreciated, I do have quite a bit of Avios anyway so might just have to do it via the Avios and use the voucher elsewhere. thanks for your detailed help!

    BTW neither QR or AY fly to Ulaanbataar anyway 🙁

    Even with Avios vía AY to PVG, your looking at quite high taxes in J. But at 62.5k Avios to there or South Korea one way it’s a bargain. ICN have a lot of airlines flying direct to Ulaanbaatar and taxes one way with AY are peanuts.

    Yes, I realise that, but they can get you to Beijing, Japan or Korea which is a lot nearer/cheaper for the onward flight than HK. Obviously non Avios routings are a whole lot more convenient.
