Lost Avios points

First off, my fault. As a newbie to Nectar and Avios, I was attempting to convert all my Nectar points to Avios. I inadvertently clicked the wrong ‘switch’ button and transferred some Avios points back to Nectar. I transferred them back to Avios but, in the process of doing all that, I lost 5,000 Avios points due to conversion rates between the two. I called both Nectar and BA/Avios but both keep referring me back to the other. The 5,000 has disappeared into thin air it seems. As I say, my fault but it’s all a bit complicated the first time around. Any helpful advice to get the points back appreciated. Thanks.

I’m afraid I can’t hold out much hope. You have lost your avios via the two conversions, at different rates, which you initiated. So they have disappeared, but not exactly into thin air.
You aren’t the first to have fallen foul of this- it is very easy with your first conversion not to notice the default direction. However, no-one has reported success in getting avios reinstated. I suspect anyone you speak to wouldn’t be able to reverse the conversions even if they wanted to take pity, and I can’t honestly see any grounds for escalating a complaint.

The reality is that you made a mistake but there is not much you can do. The conversion from Avios to Nectar is less generous than in the other direction. This is deliberately done to encourage you to convert nectar to Avios and dissuade you from going in the other direction.
