Hi,
I wanted to use my avious or my upgrade voucher to book a flight to Malaysia 6th Sept flyout and return on the 15th of Sept.
What is the best way to do this?
I should have made it a bit more clear,
I have a BA companion voucher and I also have a Barclays Upgrade voucher.
Search the route as you usually would on BA.com. You can’t use either voucher as they’re for BA flights only. You do get the option to mix different cash + Avios options though so it can be pretty cheap — we got 20k and £200ish for a 3 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur which is pretty reasonable.
Thank you @executiveclubber
Your best bet would be to get as close as possible then another avios/cash booking to get you to your final destination. Given your timing all the popular choices ie. SIN or HKG are long gone. Plenty of choices if you don’t mind changing in one of the Indian airports.
BAPP voucher opens up more availability but you can’t search LHR-KUL to see this as BA don’t fly direct anymore. You will need to search Lon-Sin/Hkg. You will also then need to do on a separate booking the short haul and likely collect bags and recheck in for that leg. It’s quite a lot of effort/time eaten into your trip especially for a short one. Having said that, I did notice HKG availability is decent and CX do release last minute tickets too.
Worth searching on qatar website too for 75k each way in business. Availability is different vs Ba site.
You can search for MH direct with the standard Lon-Kul but availability for partners on this route in J is pretty hard to come by.
Also possible to fly using virgin points on KLM (UK-Ams-Kul) but more points than options above (110-120k).
If you can fly a day earlier, there is availability on qatar sept 5-15. I would snap these up asap if I was you. 150k no voucher.
Maybe hold off for a couple of weeks if you can. Strong rumours that BA may start flying to KUL again.

Pray tell, what is the source of this “strong rumours”
That would be great for many but why hold off? It’s only a nominal amount to cancel avios tickets

Agree with this.

Who is Sean M, and why does that imply BA over any other airline?
That wasn’t my source, but maybe Sean M (who I wasn’t familiar with) heard the same rumour as me.
So Qatar is asking for 220k points and £560 for business (return flight)
The main issue I have is that, this is a bike trip so I’ve got a bike box, and it wouldn’t be ideal having to check out and check back in if I tried to go via Hong Kong etc….
I do however want to try to use the vouchers – however BA won’t be operating to Malaysia until October 😭
I’ll need to check what Malaysia airlines is offering in terms of Avoid points.
I can’t seem to find how to get Malaysia avois booking availability information.
Can someone please let me know how to search for the flights
If it’s not showing on BA.com them it’s likely just a case of them not having any award availability on those dates.
I believe consensus is they are pretty mean when it comes to releasing seats.
Ok, I guess Qatar it is then, I’m not sure if 225k points is good value, how do you guys decide to pull the trigger?
That seems like marginal value to me, on the basis you could fly Etihad on those dates for £2500. By the time you account for the taxes etc, you’re getting less than 1p per avios in value.
However if you’ve got no shortage of Avios then book it – you can always cancel later.
Note there are standard awards available BHX-KUL on the 6th September, so if you can get the train 1hr north you can save 75k avios. By September the construction work at BHX should be completed and they use the Clubrooms. The flight leaves at 2pm as well so plenty of time to get there. You can fly back to BHX or LON.
U can still save 75k if u fly out on Sept 5 from london.
Cheers YC I ended up going a day earlier and getting the business class flight. I’m so happy it’s the first time I’ve used my avios points. Looking forward to finding ways to increase them quickly now.
I promised my wife a trip to Japan business class and so need to ensure I have enough points to cover that trip
You also need a booking strategy for Japan as it’s so popular, there’s plenty of reader experience on here!
