Have Avios points just been devalued? I’ve just been trying to book from LHR to JFK and ba.com now quotes 25,000 one way for an off-peak date, and 30,000 at peak! I was expecting 13,000 as per the price chart—almost half as many. I even called up and they confirmed that this was the correct price.
Just picked a random date and got 26k avios plus £290 surcharges for an off peak return in economy

I’m guessing that was for the lowest cash component.
If you look at more pricing options you have the option to pay more surcharges for less Avios.
Exactly …. I get at least one email a week from someone who fails to click ‘More pricing options’ or doesn’t click through to the final payment page, where the original price appears.
This is a BA issue though, not a reader issue.
Ah, I see. This was one of the ‘reward saver’ flights, I had assumed that this simply meant lower fees/taxes. I didn’t realise the Avios cost also increased accordingly.
Yes – if you book as a standalone in Y, you only get the RFS option. I think if you book a mixed class redemption, it still prices up the Y leg as per the old system, though I suppose this could change at any point.
Sorry, could you explain what the old system you’re referring to is?
The one you referred to in your original post, 13k avios plus surcharges. The surcharges on economy usually made it a poor redemption unless cash prices were very high. I quite like RFS, if you’re avios-rich you can book a one-way back from the US on a short day flight without getting gouged for surcharges. Also, domestic connections are thrown in absolutely free (and you can choose CE), though BA might tidy up that IT glitch at some point!
