I want to change the card for an upcoming stay over to my saved Amex – to take advantage of the new cashback offer. However when I do this in the App it fails with error “Integer cannot be 905_1”! Also errors on web page and also with a newly added Amex. Will have to wait till Check-in and hope they don’t pre-charge it!
Other saved cards OK..
If they pre-charge you can ask when you check in for them to refund and charge to a new card. I’ve even had it done on a debit card (although that is a bit of nightmare, credit cards are no problem).
Try it via the Hilton website instead as the app can be troublesome when switching cards.
If it’s a pay at checkout booking, visit the front desk when they are free (usually at night) and ask them, they’ll happily charge whatever card you want to.

Same on web – so looks like when they try to authenticate the card..
Yes thanks, at least other options as not a prepaid rate.
When checking in just say you want to use the Amex for the bill.
This – unless it’s a rate where they’re going to take payment before you check in, they normally ask if you want to pay the bill with your card on file, at which point you can just hand over your preferred one and ask them to take details. That way you can do quick checkout as well and not have to hang around to pay the bill.
I unfortunately had to fly out of Luton earlier this year and stayed at the Hampton there.
I had the same idea with the previous instance of the Amex offer, and was unable to change the card on the website or app.
Upon arrival after stating my name and waiting for the staff member to pull up my booking I then told him I’d like to use a different card.
He said “thank God you said that when you did – if you’d said it 3 seconds later I would have charged the original card and I wouldn’t be able to change it”. This was the most senior staff member on duty too…
I had a similar problem at the Doubletree St Anne’s Bracknell. I wanted to charge a specific amount to one Amex to get it to £200.01 and put the rest on the next Amex. But they refused to do this at check in. During the stay I planned some more stays to max out the rest of my Amexes and the conclusion was that I could charge the full amount of this stay to a different Amex. But when I went to the front desk they said the original Amex had already been charged and it was impossible to change or refund/recharge. The duty manager concurred with their junior staff. So I decided to cancel my Hilton stays and divert then to IHG, which also had an Amex offer which I hadn’t been planning to hit.

My experience at the Hilton Olympia at the weekend. Booking reserved weeks ago on my Hilton Barclaycard. I thought that I have changed this online to an Amex. Went to check-in and the Barclaycard still showing. Told the agent that I wanted to change this and actually split the bill between two cards when checking out. ‘So split between two people?’. Me – ‘no, two cards, both in my name’. Changed the reservation to an Amex.
The Invoice was emailed through the night, which was all on the one Amex. I went to the desk and ask to split the bill. ‘So you want me to cancel this and recharge to to two cards’ – ‘Yes’.
He seemed a bit miffed to be honest. Part credited the first card with the remainder showing on the second.
My experience is that larger chain hotels like Hiltons will usually charge overnight in the early hours of the morning before checkout, in theory to making the checkout process faster/contactless.
In the scenario of splitting costs the way I’ve got this to work is to tell them at some point during the stay that I want to partially pay on account off Card A and get them to take the payment there and then. Then make sure they leave Card B on the booking, they’ll then charge Card B on checkout. Leaving the split until checkout can be a pain.
Odd I’ve never had an issue splitting over multiple cards either at check in or check out. Small brands or the larger chains like Marriott Hilton or IHG
NGL I very rarely stay at Hilton these days so perhaps they’ve changed their systems.
