Forums Payment cards American Express Odd Amex BAPP issue

  • 259 posts

I have been a Platinum card holder since 2007 and was an original card holder for the BAPP card as it was free to Platinum card holders. When they introduced the fee it remained free until around 2 – 2.5 years ago. At that point I referred my wife and she took the BAPP card and I dropped it.

It will be 2 years since I closed it around the 16th July according to my records. My wife has a decent referral bonus and this morning we triggered her 241 voucher.

I believe that if she now cancels she will get a pro rata refund on the fee. Is that correct?

What’s is odd is that I asked Amex via Chat to confirm the date I cancelled my last BAPP card and they have no record (allegedly) of me ever having the card. They can see my supplementary card which I hold on my wife’s account and my platinum but nothing else.

All very odd as I had annual 241 for many years. Is it normal that Amex staff cannot see historical cards. I always thought they could!

@Paul – Amex will have all these records, it’s just that telephone/chat agents can’t see them. The SUB awarding system definitely sees everything, so you need to make sure that the date you have for when you instructed the closure of your account accords with when the account was formally closed by Amex.

Your wife can still get a pro-rata refund on cancellation.

I would call rather than go via chat with a query like this. It may well be that the chat person is located in another part of the world.

I phoned and they told me the date I last held one to check the 2 years were up.

Be very careful about the date. Give an extra 2 weeks buffer after what you think it might be. I recently had amex confirm via phone and chat that I was eligible on day of conversation but turned out they were both wrong and I was a week early for 2 years. Amex agreed to half the SUB after complaint raised as agents were both wrong but refused to give full SUB directing me to the FOS which I haven’t bothered with. In short make a note of all dates on your side and leave a buffer and don’t reply on cs

All rather mute given the ludicrous £6k spend target now.

I think you mean moot rather than mute 😀 Although you could say the offer is somewhat muted as a result.
