Hi all, am hoping to fly LHR -> PVG and HKG -> LHR with a companion voucher.
I understand that it is cheaper to buy 2x separate single tickets in this case as taxes and charges are much cheaper from flights originating from Hong Kong. So I would have to book two single tickets: LHR -> PVG with companion voucher on full Avios, and book HKG -> LHR with full Avios; and supposedly BA can link the bookings and refund half of the Avios on the second flight.
In fact, I did confirm that this was possible over the phone with a BA agent last week. However, after booking the two separate tickets yesterday, I was told that this was not possible. Ultimately I refunded the flights within the 24 hr cooling off period. I called again today and was again told that this is not possible, and I would have to book a single ticket open jaw booking instead (for approx £150 more).
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with this recently?
Have you read the very long thread (not to mention the anrticles on this site) about booking the return sector with the 241? You will find every permutation of this process in there, and yes, many people have done it successfully recently!
@thzane – I think the issue you have encountered is that the informal/concessionary arrangement whereby you can make two separate bookings and claim back 50% Avios without a recalculation of the fare/taxes only applies when it wasn’t possible to make the second booking because the booking dates for that weren’t open at the time of the first booking.
It unfortunately isn’t a general route for getting out of paying the TFCs applicable to a return or open jaw booking (ie benefitting from the low/no HKG surcharges). The £150 extra you report actually seems rather low and redemption seats from HKG can be hard to find.
As JDB above mentioned, it is normally only possible when booking a year in advance, when the return journey is not available yet when you book the outbound journey.
In fact, I’ve only very recently booked the exact same open jaw but in reverse order (LHR – HKG then PVG – LHR), both at the T-355 date, and managed to easily get the 50% Avios back via Twitter
